England thrash France 6-4 in record-breaking World Cup third-place thriller

England produced a stunning attacking display to defeat France 6-4 in one of the most dramatic FIFA World Cup third-place play-offs in history, with Bukayo Saka scoring a hat-trick and Jude Bellingham sealing a nine-goal second-half thriller at Miami Stadium.

Thomas Tuchel’s side raced into a commanding 4-0 lead at half-time before France launched a remarkable comeback after the break, but England held their nerve to claim bronze and secure their best World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966.

Declan Rice set the tone for England’s dominant opening with a sensational strike after just three minutes.

The midfielder intercepted Désiré Doué’s loose pass near halfway before driving forward and curling a brilliant effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Rice then turned provider in the 18th minute, delivering a dangerous corner that Ezri Konsa headed into the far corner to double England’s advantage.

France struggled to contain England’s pace and direct attacking approach, with Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka repeatedly exploiting the space behind the French defence.

Saka added England’s third goal in the 37th minute after Rashford’s initial effort was saved by Mike Maignan.

The Arsenal winger reacted quickest to finish from close range after a brilliant counterattack.

The Three Lions completed a remarkable first half when Saka scored his second goal in stoppage time, cutting inside before firing a low left-footed strike beyond Maignan to send England into the break with a 4-0 advantage.

France had never conceded four goals in the first half of a World Cup match before the encounter, but Didier Deschamps responded with four changes at the interval, introducing Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Digne.

The changes transformed France’s performance.

Kylian Mbappé pulled one back three minutes after the restart, finishing a Michael Olise pass to move closer to the Golden Boot race and extend his record as the tournament’s leading scorer.

Barcola then reduced the deficit further in the 54th minute, racing onto Mbappé’s through ball before calmly beating Dean Henderson.

Mbappé struck again in the 66th minute after another excellent assist from Olise, making it 4-3 and raising hopes of the greatest World Cup comeback ever.

However, England refused to collapse.

Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 87th minute after Malo Gusto brought down Djed Spence inside the area, restoring England’s two-goal cushion.

France continued to fight until the final whistle, with Ousmane Dembélé scoring in the 90th minute after Dayot Upamecano’s interception and pass created the opportunity.

But Bellingham ended France’s hopes deep into stoppage time, scoring England’s sixth goal in the 98th minute after a powerful individual effort to complete an unforgettable 6-4 victory.

Saka became only the second England player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup knockout match, joining 1966 hero Geoff Hurst, while Mbappé reached 22 World Cup goals to become the competition’s all-time leading scorer.

The victory also gave England their first win over France in a competitive fixture since the 1982 World Cup and ended a run of disappointing third-place play-off defeats in 1990 and 2018.

France, the defeat marked a painful farewell for Didier Deschamps, who managed his final match after a successful decade in charge that included the 2018 World Cup triumph.

England’s attacking brilliance ultimately decided a match that will be remembered as one of the highest-scoring World Cup encounters ever — a spectacular 10-goal battle that delivered drama until the final seconds.
