PHOTOS: Police FC beat Rayon Sports on penalties to reach Super Cup final

Police FC reached the final of the 2026 FERWAFA Turbo King Super Cup after defeating Rayon Sports 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw at Kigali Pelé Stadium on Saturday.

The two sides produced a tightly contested semi-final but neither could find the breakthrough during 90 minutes.

Police FC goalkeeper Niyongira Patience and his Rayon Sports counterpart Dande Junior both made important saves as the match remained scoreless.

Rayon Sports started brightly, with Atisso Kodjo testing Niyongira early before the Police FC goalkeeper produced another important save to deny Uwumukiza Obed.

Luc Ndohoungar came close with a header, only for Dande Junior to keep Rayon in the contest.

The second half continued in the same competitive fashion. Rayon Sports appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after Iradukunda Elie Tatou went down inside the Police FC box, while Police also created opportunities through Kwitonda Alain and Gakwaya Leonard.

Neither side could break the deadlock, despite several substitutions as both coaches looked for a decisive moment. Rayon introduced Iradukunda Elie Tatou, Muhoza Daniel, Tambwe Gloire and Nisingizwe Christian, while Police brought on Manishimwe Djabel, Tangara Keffa, Moussa Limane and Ndayishimiye Divin.

After four minutes of added time, the match went directly to a penalty shoot-out.

Police FC missed their opening kick, with Dande Junior saving Manishimwe Djabel's effort.

However, Niyongira Patience responded by denying Nshuti Didier's first penalty for Rayon Sports.

Nshimirimana Ismael and Kwitonda Alain converted for Police, while Nisingizwe Christian and Muhoza Daniel scored for Rayon.

Moussa Limane also converted before Kameni Junior struck the crossbar for Rayon.

Mudahemuka Jean de Dieu then scored Police’s fifth penalty to seal a 4-2 shoot-out victory.

Police FC will face Kiyovu Sports in Sunday’s final.

Kiyovu booked their place after beating Mukura Victory Sports 1-0 in the opening semi-final, with Mugisha Didier scoring from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.

The 2026 edition marks a significant change to the traditional format of the FERWAFA Super Cup.

The competition, first played in 2002, traditionally brought together the Rwanda Premier League champions and Peace Cup winners.

APR FC won the inaugural edition, beating Rayon Sports 2-1.

APR FC are the most successful Super Cup side, with four titles according to available records, followed by Rayon Sports with three.

AS Kigali have won twice, while Police FC have one title.

APR won the trophy in 2002, 2016, 2018 and 2025; Rayon Sports lifted it in 2017, 2019 and 2023; AS Kigali won in 2013 and 2022; and Police FC claimed the 2024 edition after beating APR on penalties.

The 2025 edition saw APR FC beat Rayon Sports 4-1.

For the 2026 tournament, APR FC withdrew after winning both the 2025/26 league title and Peace Cup.

The four-team competition therefore features Kiyovu Sports, Mukura Victory Sports, Rayon Sports and Police FC.

FERWAFA has also increased the prize money, with the champions set to receive Frw40 million, while the runners-up will earn Frw20 million from Frw20 million and Frw10 million respectively.
