Serena Williams returns to Tennis after four-year absence

Tennis legend Serena Williams is set to make a remarkable return to competitive tennis nearly four years after stepping away from the sport.

The 44-year-old American has accepted a wildcard entry into the women’s doubles event at Queen’s Club in London, marking her first professional appearance since the 2022 US Open.

Although tournament organizers have not officially confirmed her partner, reports indicate that Williams is expected to team up with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko.

The tournament begins on 8 June and will serve as the first chapter of Williams’ unexpected comeback.

Williams announced her retirement, or what she described as an “evolution away” from tennis, in 2022 after one of the most successful careers in sporting history.

She captured 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any woman in the Open Era, and spent 319 weeks as world number one.

Her achievements also include 73 WTA singles titles, four Olympic gold medals, and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her sister Venus Williams.

Speculation about a possible return first emerged last year when Williams’ name appeared in the sport’s anti-doping testing pool.

The rumors intensified after she was included on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s reinstatement list earlier this year.

On Monday, Williams appeared to confirm the news through a social media video showing her walking onto a tennis court, accompanied by the caption: “Guess everybody heard the news.”

Williams expressed her excitement about returning at Queen’s Club, describing it as the ideal venue to begin a new chapter in her career.

She highlighted her special connection with grass courts, which provided some of the most memorable moments of her career, including seven Wimbledon singles titles and seven Wimbledon doubles crowns.

Her expected partner, 19-year-old Victoria Mboko, is considered one of the brightest young talents in women’s tennis.

Mboko has previously described Williams as her idol, making the partnership particularly significant.

The announcement has naturally sparked speculation about whether Williams intends to compete at Wimbledon later this summer.

While she would require a wildcard entry, many believe her return to Queen’s could be a stepping stone toward a singles comeback at the All England Club.

Former champion John McEnroe suggested that an athlete of Williams’ stature would likely return with ambitions of competing for major titles rather than simply participating.

Since retiring, Williams has largely stayed away from professional tennis while focusing on family life and business ventures.
