PHOTOS: Kayonza RFC Dominates Alfa Kagugu Rugby Youth Festival 2026
Kayonza Rugby Football Club (RFC) emerged the Alfa Kagugu Rugby Youth Festival 2026, a grassroots tournament organized by Alfa Kagugu RFC to promote youth talent and development in rugby across Rwanda.
The one-day event took place on April 4, 2026, at Mbonwa Grounds in Kinyinya Sector, Gasabo District, in the City of Kigali.
The festival brought together several youth teams from across the country, offering a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and passion for the sport.
In the Under-18 boys’ category, Kayonza RFC clinched the title after a narrow 7–0 victory over Ruhetse RFC.
The club continued its dominance in the Under-18 girls’ where they secured a convincing 20–0 win against Ndera RFC to complete a double triumph.
Meanwhile, hosts Alfa Kagugu RFC celebrated success in the Under-15 category, winning the title after defeating Rwamagana Hippos RFC 15–10 in the Tag Rugby (T1 Rugby) final.
Speaking about the importance of the tournament, Alfa Kagugu RFC President Samuel Dusengimana emphasized the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent and expanding the reach of rugby in Rwanda.
“Alfa Kagugu RFC remains committed to growing rugby and creating opportunities for young athletes across Rwanda,” he said.
“We were honored to welcome the CEO of the Rwanda Rugby Federation, Ufitimfura Donatien, alongside local government leaders, who joined us to witness this important moment for youth rugby development. Their presence continues to inspire the next generation of players.” he added
The festival featured a diverse teams across different categories.
In the Under-15 boys’ competition, teams were grouped into three pools, including 1000 Hills, Alfa Kagugu A and B, Jabana A and B, Ndela Hills, Nduba, Kayonza, Ruhetse, and Gishaka.
The Under-18 girls’ category included two groups, featuring teams such as Jabana, Ndela Hills, 1000 Hills, Nduba, Gishaka, Ruhetse, and Kayonza.
The Alfa Kagugu Rugby Youth Festival continues to play a vital role in identifying and developing young rugby talent, while fostering community engagement and strengthening the sport’s foundation in Rwanda.
