Andreeva beats Chwalinska to win French Open and first Grand Slam

Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva announced herself as the newest star of women’s tennis after defeating Poland’s Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 to win the 2026 French Open women’s singles title at Roland Garros.

The victory secured Andreeva’s first Grand Slam crown and made her the youngest French Open champion since Monica Seles won the tournament in 1992.

The 19-year-old delivered a composed and dominant performance to cap a remarkable fortnight in Paris and fulfill the promise that has surrounded her since her breakthrough on the professional tour.

Andreeva entered the final as the favourite but faced a determined Chwalinska, who had enjoyed one of the most memorable runs of the tournament.

The Polish player battled through the qualifying rounds and reached her first Grand Slam final despite starting the event ranked 114th in the world.

However, Andreeva’s superior experience, consistency and attacking game proved too much for her opponent.

She controlled the match from the baseline, won the key rallies and rarely allowed Chwalinska to settle into her rhythm.

The Russian struck 25 winners and won 58 percent of points behind her first serve, underlining her dominance throughout the contest.

Although she briefly showed signs of nerves after leading 5-0 in the second set, Andreeva quickly regained control to close out the biggest victory of her career.

Speaking after the match, she admitted she had felt pressure but never lost belief in her ability to finish the job.

The triumph represents another major milestone in a career that has risen rapidly over the past three years.

Born in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, on April 29, 2007, Andreeva began playing tennis at an early age and quickly emerged as one of the sport’s brightest young talents.

Alongside her sister, Erika Andreeva, she trained intensively and developed a game built on powerful groundstrokes, intelligence and mental toughness.

She first captured global attention in 2023 when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon at just 16 years old.

During the same season, she also impressed at Roland Garros, reaching the third round on her Grand Slam debut.

Those performances signaled the arrival of a future champion.

Over the following years, Andreeva continued her rise by winning WTA titles and establishing herself among the world’s leading players.

Her success in Paris now confirms her place among the elite of women’s tennis.
