Lionel Messi produced another masterclass as Argentina scored twice in the closing stages to defeat England 2-1 in a dramatic 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday night, booking their place in Sunday’s final against Spain.

England looked destined for a first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon’s second-half opener had put Thomas Tuchel’s side within touching distance of glory.

But the defending champions demonstrated the resilience that has defined their tournament, with Messi providing assists for Enzo Fernández and substitute Lautaro Martínez to complete a remarkable late turnaround.

The opening half was a tense tactical battle with few clear-cut opportunities as both teams struggled to break each other down.

England came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute when John Stones rose highest to meet Declan Rice’s inviting free-kick, only to head narrowly into the side-netting.

Argentina, marshalled by captain Messi, enjoyed periods of possession but found England’s disciplined defence difficult to penetrate.

The first half ended goalless, with neither goalkeeper seriously tested in what was a fiercely contested encounter featuring several robust challenges and yellow cards.

The match burst into life 10 minutes after the restart.

Morgan Rogers, making his first World Cup start, delivered a superb cross into the penalty area after clever build-up play involving Rice.

Anthony Gordon timed his run perfectly to evade Nahuel Molina before calmly guiding his finish beyond Emiliano Martínez in the 55th minute, sparking jubilant celebrations among England supporters.

Tuchel’s side appeared in control for much of the second half, with Jordan Pickford producing an outstanding save to deny Nicolás González as Argentina searched desperately for an equaliser.

However, England's increasingly defensive approach invited relentless pressure from Lionel Scaloni’s men.

The breakthrough finally came in the 85th minute when Messi found Enzo Fernández just outside the penalty area.

The Chelsea midfielder curled a magnificent strike into the bottom corner from 25 yards, leaving Pickford with no chance and swinging momentum firmly in Argentina’s favour.

As the match entered nine minutes of added time, Argentina delivered the decisive blow.

After Alexis Mac Allister struck the post, Messi collected the loose ball and produced a delightful chipped cross into the box.

Lautaro Martínez, introduced from the bench, rose above England’s defenders to head powerfully past Pickford in the 92nd minute, completing a stunning comeback.

England pushed desperately for a late equaliser but Argentina expertly managed the closing moments to secure victory and preserve their perfect record at the tournament.
