Mbappé penalty sends France past Paraguay, sets Up Morocco quarter-final clash
Kylian Mbappé kept his composure from the penalty spot to fire France into the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday.
The France captain converted from 12 yards in the 70th minute after a VAR review awarded Didier Deschamps’ side a penalty, ending Paraguay’s stubborn resistance and setting up a mouthwatering quarter-final clash against Morocco.
France entered the match as overwhelming favourites after scoring at least three goals in each of their previous four matches, but Gustavo Alfaro’s disciplined Paraguay side frustrated Les Bleus for long periods with a compact defensive display.
The opening half offered few clear chances despite France dominating possession. Deschamps’ men controlled nearly 80 percent of the ball but struggled to penetrate Paraguay’s deep defensive block, with Orlando Gill producing another composed performance in goal.
Paraguay, fresh from their dramatic penalty shootout victory over Germany in the previous round, focused on organization rather than attack, limiting France to speculative efforts from distance.
The first half ended without a single shot on target from either side, highlighting Paraguay’s disciplined defending and France’s difficulty breaking down the South Americans.
France increased the tempo after the restart.
Kouadio Koné forced Gill into the game's first meaningful save in the 55th minute with a powerful long-range effort, while Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé began finding more space as Paraguay gradually retreated deeper.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute.
Substitute Désiré Doué produced a dazzling run into the penalty area before being brought down by Diego Gómez.
Referee Ilgiz Tantashev initially allowed play to continue but pointed to the spot after consulting the pitch-side monitor following a VAR review.
Mbappé stepped forward two minutes later and calmly sent Gill the wrong way, placing his penalty into the bottom-right corner for his ninth goal of the tournament and his 19th FIFA World Cup goal overall.
The strike further strengthened his remarkable knockout-stage record, extending his tally to 11 World Cup knockout goals—more than any player in tournament history.
Paraguay attempted to push forward in search of an equalizer but rarely threatened Mike Maignan's goal, failing to register a meaningful shot on target throughout the contest.
France nearly doubled their advantage in stoppage time. Gill produced two outstanding saves to deny Mbappé from close range before later pushing away another fierce effort from the French captain to keep Paraguay alive until the final whistle.
Despite the narrow scoreline, France controlled proceedings for most of the evening, finishing with overwhelming possession and territorial dominance against a Paraguay side that defended bravely but offered little going forward.
The victory extends France's unbeaten World Cup record against South American opponents since 1978 and sends the 2018 champions into another quarter-final.
Deschamps’ side will now meet Morocco in Boston in one of the tournament's most eagerly anticipated quarter-final clashes, while Paraguay exit with pride after exceeding expectations by reaching the knockout stages and eliminating Germany in the previous round.
