Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a tense 0-0 draw after extra time at BC Place on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as Switzerland's hero, producing a decisive save from Juan Hernández during the shootout before Rubén Vargas calmly converted the winning penalty to send Murat Yakin’s side into a last-eight showdown with Argentina in Kansas City.

The victory marks Switzerland's first appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals since hosting the tournament in 1954 and extends an impressive run under Yakin, whose team has now won four consecutive World Cup matches.

Despite Colombia enjoying the better opportunities over 120 minutes, they were left to rue missed chances and another painful penalty exit after suffering the same fate against England in the 2018 Round of 16.

The South Americans controlled much of a cagey opening period, with Gustavo Puerta forcing Kobel into an excellent fingertip save after curling an effort toward the top corner.

James Rodríguez, making a Colombian-record 11th World Cup start, orchestrated several dangerous set pieces, while Luis Díaz consistently threatened down the left flank.

Switzerland gradually settled into the contest before halftime.

Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye both tested Camilo Vargas, but neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled as the teams entered the break scoreless.

The Swiss almost found the breakthrough shortly after the restart when Ndoye burst into the penalty area before setting up Djibril Sow, whose first-time effort flashed agonizingly wide.

Colombia responded through Luis Suárez, who squandered a promising shooting opportunity from the edge of the area, while Rieder came closest for Switzerland with a curling free-kick that rippled the side netting.

Neither side could produce the decisive moment in normal time, sending the final Round of 16 tie into extra time.

The additional 30 minutes finally brought genuine drama.

Jhon Lucumí powered a towering header against the crossbar from Juan Quintero’s corner before Jaminton Campaz twice came within inches of settling the contest, first forcing Kobel into a spectacular save and later blazing over the crossbar when presented with a clear one-on-one opportunity.

Switzerland also threatened, with substitute Zeki Amdouni denied brilliantly by Vargas, but penalties ultimately proved unavoidable.

The shootout swung repeatedly. Juan Quintero and Granit Xhaka converted the opening kicks before Davinson Sánchez smashed Colombia’s second penalty against the crossbar.

Manuel Akanji then failed to capitalize, blasting over the bar to restore parity.

Campaz and Cedric Itten both scored before Kobel dived superbly to deny Hernández. Luis Díaz kept Colombia alive with a composed finish, but Vargas confidently buried Switzerland’s fifth penalty into the bottom corner to spark jubilant celebrations among the Swiss players and supporters.

Although Colombia finished with the superior expected-goals tally and arguably created the better opportunities, Switzerland once again demonstrated remarkable resilience and composure under pressure.

Their reward is a mouthwatering quarter-final clash against reigning world champions Argentina, while Colombia departs the tournament wondering how another World Cup dream slipped away from 12 yards.
