Croatia edge Ghana to reach World Cup knockout stage

Croatia secured their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana in their decisive Group L clash at Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday night.

Zlatko Dalić’s experienced side showed resilience and composure to overcome a determined Ghanaian team and book a Round of 32 meeting with Portugal.

Knowing only a victory would guarantee qualification, Croatia approached the contest with patience against a Ghana side that had entered the match boasting one of the tournament’s strongest defensive records.

The opening half was a tactical affair with few clear-cut opportunities, although Croatia looked the more threatening side throughout.

Their persistence paid off in the 31st minute when Petar Sučić produced a moment of brilliance.

Receiving a perfectly timed pass from Mateo Kovačić just outside the penalty area, the midfielder unleashed a low, powerful strike through a crowd of defenders that nestled into the bottom-left corner beyond goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

It was only Sučić's second international goal, but one that could prove vital in Croatia’s World Cup campaign.

Croatia nearly doubled their advantage before halftime after Nikola Vlašić had earlier struck the post, while Ghana struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities in a frustrating opening 45 minutes.

The Black Stars emerged after the interval with greater urgency.

Coach Carlos Queiroz introduced fresh attacking options, and Ghana began to trouble Croatia’s experienced back line.

Their improvement was rewarded in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen converted Ernest Nuamah’s inviting free-kick from close range.

Although the assistant referee initially flagged for offside, a lengthy VAR review overturned the decision, allowing the goal to stand and giving Ghana renewed hope.

However, Croatia responded like seasoned tournament veterans.

Just ten minutes after conceding, Luka Modrić delivered a trademark corner that found Nikola Vlašić, whose perfectly directed header bounced in off the post to restore Croatia’s lead.

The assist further enhanced Modrić's remarkable World Cup legacy, making the 40-year-old the oldest player to register an assist in the tournament since Opta records began in 1966.

Ghana pushed desperately for another equaliser during seven minutes of added time, but Croatia defended resolutely to preserve the victory and finish second in Group L behind England, who defeated Panama in the other group fixture.

The result extends Croatia’s reputation as one of international football’s most consistent tournament teams.

World Cup runners-up in 2018 and third-place finishers in 2022, the Europeans once again demonstrated their ability to deliver under pressure despite fielding one of the tournament's oldest squads.

Croatia now turn their attention to a challenging knockout encounter against Portugal, while Ghana will face Colombia as they look to keep their World Cup dream alive.
