PHOTOS: Late Hamiss goal seals FERWAFA Super Cup for Kiyovu Sports

Kiyovu Sports won the 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup on Sunday after Hakim Hamiss scored in the 83rd minute to give them a 1-0 victory over Police FC at Kigali Pelé Stadium.

Hamiss converted from close range after defender Ntwali Asman delivered a cross into the penalty area, giving Kiyovu their first major trophy since 2022.

The Super Cup was contested by four teams that finished among the leading sides in Rwanda’s 2025-26 domestic season, although neither Kiyovu nor Police had won the country's two major competitions, the league championship and Peace Cup.

Kiyovu finished third in the 2025/26 league campaign, while Police FC reached the Super Cup final after eliminating Rayon Sports in the semi-finals.

Police were without captain Nsabimana Eric, known as “Zidane”, who sustained an injury during their semi-final against Rayon Sports.

Kiyovu were able to include Hamiss after receiving his playing clearance following an appeal in a dispute with Gasogi United.

Gasogi had been ordered to release the player after the matter was reviewed.

The final began cautiously, with neither side creating significant opportunities during a first half in which both teams struggled to establish an attacking rhythm.

The Green and White of Kigali increased the pressure after the interval and came close to opening the scoring in the 49th minute when Hamiss struck a powerful shot that went narrowly over the Police goal.

Police responded a minute later from a corner.

The resulting scramble inside the Kiyovu penalty area gave Kwitonda Alain an opportunity to shoot, but Kiyovu goalkeeper James Desire made the save.

Both coaches subsequently changed their line-ups in an effort to influence the match.

Kiyovu coach Harrison Mark Simon introduced Mugisha Didier, Gihozo David and Avit Nkundimana for Lola Kanda Moise, Shaba Kagayo and Rwabuhihi Placide.

Police coach Rkyek Jaafar brought on Ingabire Chrisman, Ekeson Okorie and Manishimwe Djabel, replacing Tangara Keffa, Iradukunda Simeon and Luc Bide Ndohoungar.

The match appeared destined to remain goalless until Asman created the opening for Hamiss 10 minutes from full time.

The forward made no mistake from inside the box to settle the final and give Kiyovu the trophy.

The victory adds to Kiyovu’s history as one of Rwanda’s oldest football clubs.

Founded in 1964, the club has been a prominent force in domestic football and has maintained a long-standing rivalry with Rayon Sports.

Kiyovu’s most recent major trophy before Sunday’s victory came in 2022, when they beat Rayon Sports 2-1 to win the Made in Rwanda Cup.

The Super Cup success provides Kiyovu with an early boost ahead of the 2026/27 season, despite their third-place finish in the previous league campaign.

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) will award Kiyovu RWF40 million ($34,000) for winning the Super Cup, while Police FC will receive RWF20 million.

The Super Cup is organised by FERWAFA and brings together leading domestic clubs at the start of the new football season.
