Arias sends Colombia past toothless Ghana into World Cup last 16

Colombia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 with a disciplined 1-0 victory over Ghana on Saturday, as Jhon Arias’ early strike and another commanding defensive display proved enough to eliminate the Black Stars at Kansas City Stadium.

Néstor Lorenzo’s side capitalized on their early dominance through Arias’ 14th-minute winner before shutting down Ghana's attack in a composed performance that set up a round-of-16 showdown with Switzerland in Vancouver.

The South Americans controlled proceedings from the opening whistle, combining slick attacking football with the defensive organization that has become their hallmark during the tournament.

Colombia suffered an early setback when striker Jhon Córdoba limped off injured after just eight minutes, forcing Luis Suárez into an unexpected introduction.

The change, however, barely disrupted their rhythm.

The breakthrough came six minutes later. Suárez surged down the right and saw his initial cross blocked, but he reacted quickest to retrieve the loose ball before delivering a second inviting cross.

Luis Díaz allowed the delivery to run across the six-yard box, where Arias arrived unmarked at the back post to sweep a first-time finish beyond Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

The goal rewarded Colombia’s overwhelming superiority after dominating possession and pinning Ghana deep inside their own half.

Lorenzo’s side continued to create opportunities before the break.

Díaz fired narrowly into the side netting after latching onto a clever James Rodríguez pass, while Suárez headed over from a promising position.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Ati-Zigi produced a magnificent reflex save to claw Johan Mojica’s close-range header away from goal and keep Ghana within touching distance.

Ghana, who progressed from the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams, struggled to threaten throughout the contest.

Carlos Queiroz’s men found it difficult to retain possession or penetrate Colombia’s well-drilled back line, with Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo and Iñaki Williams isolated for long periods.

Colombia thought they had doubled their lead shortly before the hour when Díaz calmly finished after another flowing attack, only for the effort to be ruled out following a tight offside decision in the build-up.

Moments later, Díaz was denied again after racing through one-on-one, but Ati-Zigi spread himself brilliantly to preserve Ghana’s hopes.

The Black Stars introduced Abdul Fatawu, Ernest Nuamah and Prince Adu in search of an equalizer, yet clear opportunities remained elusive.

Their frustration reflected Colombia’s defensive discipline, with goalkeeper Camilo Vargas rarely called into serious action.

Richard Ríos and Davinson Sánchez helped shield the Colombian defence as Ghana failed to register a single shot on target over 90 minutes, underlining the South Americans' complete control.

Colombia nearly added a second in stoppage time when Ríos forced another sharp save from Ati-Zigi, who emerged as Ghana’s standout performer despite the defeat.

The victory sends Colombia into the World Cup last 16 for the third time in their history, where they will face Switzerland.
