Vinicius brace powers Brazil past Scotland into World Cup knockouts

Brazil produced a commanding display to defeat Scotland 3-0 at Miami Stadium on Thursday, securing top spot in Group C and a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

The five-time world champions were in control from start to finish, with Vinicius Junior delivering a man-of-the-match performance that underlined Brazil’s growing status as one of the tournament favourites.

The Real Madrid star scored twice and terrorized the Scottish defense throughout the contest as Carlo Ancelotti’s side finished the group stage unbeaten.

Brazil struck early in the seventh minute after Scotland defender Scott McKenna made a costly mistake while attempting to play out from the back.

Bournemouth youngster Rayan pressed aggressively, won possession, and set up Vinicius, who calmly rounded goalkeeper Angus Gunn before rolling the ball into an empty net.

The South Americans thought they had doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Vinicius capitalized on another defensive error, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul in the buildup.

Brazil continued to dominate possession and chances, eventually finding a deserved second goal in first-half stoppage time.

Bruno Guimaraes delivered a superb cross to the back post, where Vinicius rose unmarked to head home his fourth goal of the tournament and give Brazil a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime.

Scotland attempted to respond after the break, with Scott McTominay forcing Alisson Becker into a save, but Steve Clarke’s side struggled to create meaningful opportunities against Brazil’s organized defense.

The decisive third goal arrived in the 60th minute following a flowing Brazilian move.

Casemiro threaded a perfectly weighted through midfield to Guimaraes, who unselfishly squared the ball for Matheus Cunha to finish from close range and make it 3-0.

Brazil finished with an impressive expected-goals tally of 4.46 compared to Scotland’s 1.13, highlighting the gulf in attacking quality between the two sides.

Vinicius was deservedly voted player of the match after scoring twice and constantly threatening Scotland’s back line.

The match also marked the long-awaited return of Neymar, who made his first appearance for Brazil since October 2023 after coming off the bench in the 76th minute.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star received a standing ovation from the Brazilian supporters in Miami.

The result sees Brazil finish first in Group C with seven points, ahead of Morocco, who also qualified after defeating Haiti 4-2.

Scotland finish third with three points and must now wait to discover whether their goal difference will be enough to earn one of the best third-placed spots in the knockout stage.
