Ghana edge closer to knockouts after holding England
England were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by a disciplined Ghana side at Boston Stadium on Tuesday night, missing the opportunity to secure early qualification for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.
After an exciting 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening Group L match, the Three Lions arrived as overwhelming favourites.
However, Ghana’s organised defensive display and tactical discipline denied Thomas Tuchel's men throughout the contest.
England dominated possession and registered 19 shots, but only three efforts found the target.
Their best opportunities came late in the game when Nico O’Reilly’s header struck the crossbar in the 86th minute before Marc Guehi saw a stoppage-time header cleared off the line.
Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare and his defenders stood firm to earn a valuable point.
The black stars, who defeated Panama 1-0 in their opening fixture, adopted a counter-attacking approach and created limited chances of their own.
Their best opportunity arrived when substitute Prince Adu raced through on goal, only to be denied by England’s defence.
The result leaves Ghana in a strong position heading into their final group match against Croatia, while England will face Panama knowing victory should still be enough to secure progression.
England remain one of the most respected nations in world football.
The Three Lions won the FIFA World Cup in 1966 on home soil and have reached the semi-finals on three occasions, including their impressive fourth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
They are members of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), whose major competitions include the UEFA European Championship and the UEFA Nations League.
England reached the UEFA Euro finals in both 2021 and 2024.
Ghana, representing the Confederation of African Football (CAF), are four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, having lifted the continental crown in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982.
The Black Stars have established themselves as one of Africa’s strongest football nations and famously reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the joint-best performance by an African nation at the tournament.
England are coached by German tactician Thomas Tuchel.
Widely regarded as one of Europe’s elite managers, Tuchel guided Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League title in 2021 and has also won league titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
He took charge of England with the ambition of ending the nation's long wait for a second World Cup trophy.
Ghana’s coach Carlos Queiroz is among the most experienced managers in international football.
The Portuguese strategist won back-to-back FIFA U-20 World Cups with Portugal in 1989 and 1991 and has managed several national teams, including Portugal, Iran, Colombia, Egypt and Qatar.
His vast experience was evident as Ghana successfully frustrated one of the tournament favourites.
While the draw is not disastrous for England, it raises questions about their attacking efficiency.
For Ghana, however, the result represents another impressive step in their quest to reach the World Cup knockout rounds.
