Egypt reach knockout stage as Iran heartbroken by late VAR drama in Seattle
Egypt booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after battling to a dramatic 1-1 draw with Iran in a tense Group G encounter at Seattle Stadium on Saturday.
The Pharaohs finished second in the group and will now face Australia in the knockout stage, while Iran were left anxiously waiting to discover whether they would qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after a heartbreaking stoppage-time VAR decision denied them victory.
The match exploded into life almost immediately.
Egypt needed only five minutes to break the deadlock when Mohamed Salah’s effort caused confusion in the Iranian penalty area.
Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand failed to deal with the shot, allowing Mahmoud Saber to react quickest and fire a composed first-time finish through the goalkeeper’s legs and into the bottom corner.
The goal was Egypt’s fastest ever at a FIFA World Cup and rewarded their bright opening.
Iran responded with determination and nearly drew level moments later after Mohamed Abdelmonem fouled Mehdi Taremi inside the area.
Polish referee Szymon Marciniak pointed to the penalty spot, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir produced a superb save to deny Taremi’s tame effort.
The reprieve proved only temporary, however, as Iran equalised three minutes later.
Milad Mohammadi’s powerful shot was brilliantly stopped by Shobeir, but the rebound fell kindly to Ramin Rezaeian, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net to make it 1-1 after 14 minutes.
Both teams continued to attack throughout an entertaining first half.
Shoja Khalilzadeh headed narrowly wide for Iran, while Trezeguet forced Beiranvand into a comfortable save as Egypt searched for a second goal.
After the interval, Iran enjoyed the better chances, with Taremi striking the crossbar with a late header that almost secured automatic qualification.
Drama reached its peak deep into stoppage time when Khalilzadeh bundled the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations among the Iranian players and supporters who believed they had claimed a famous victory.
However, following a lengthy VAR review, the defender was judged to have been marginally offside, and the goal was ruled out.
Seconds later, Saeid Ezatolahi rattled the crossbar in one final desperate attempt, leaving Iran devastated as the final whistle confirmed the draw.
The result, combined with Belgium’s emphatic 5-1 victory over New Zealand, saw Belgium finish top of Group G while Egypt advanced in second place.
Hossam Hassan’s side will now turn their attention to a Round of 32 clash with Australia at Dallas Stadium, hoping to continue a memorable campaign after reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
For Iran, whose spirited performance deserved more, qualification now depends on results elsewhere as they seek a historic first appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds.
