Colombia top group K after holding Portugal in thrilling stalemate
Colombia secured top spot in Group K of the FIFA World Cup after battling to an entertaining 0-0 draw against Portugal at Miami Stadium on Saturday, surviving a late VAR heartbreak to finish the group stage unbeaten.
Although neither side found the net, the contest was anything but dull.
Both teams created a host of opportunities in an end-to-end encounter that showcased attacking quality.
Colombia finished with the point they needed to top the group, while Portugal settled for second place and a Round of 32 meeting with Croatia.
The South Americans started brightly, roared on by thousands of Colombian supporters who transformed the Hard Rock Stadium into what felt like a home fixture.
Luis Díaz sparked the first major opportunity inside two minutes, breaking free down the left before his deflected effort fell invitingly for Jhon Córdoba, whose header drifted narrowly over the crossbar.
Colombia continued to press with intensity, forcing Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa into several impressive saves.
Córdoba tested the Porto shot-stopper with a powerful strike after shrugging off Bruno Fernandes, while Jhon Arias came agonisingly close midway through the first half, only for Rúben Neves to clear his effort off the goal line.
Portugal gradually settled into the contest and responded with chances of their own.
Bruno Fernandes forced veteran goalkeeper Camilo Vargas into a brilliant save before João Félix volleyed just over the bar.
Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh from his two-goal display against Uzbekistan, threatened intermittently but was kept under control by Colombia’s disciplined defence, led superbly by Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Lucumí.
The second half maintained the same high tempo despite the humid Miami conditions.
James Rodríguez orchestrated Colombia’s attacks with trademark vision, creating openings for Richard Ríos, Jhon Arias and substitute Luis Suárez, but Costa remained outstanding between the posts.
At the other end, Portugal struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances, with Ronaldo dragging one effort wide and João Félix unable to find the breakthrough.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Colombia thought they had snatched a dramatic winner.
A cleverly worked corner found Sánchez, whose powerful header beat Costa and sparked wild celebrations among the Colombian faithful.
However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for the narrowest of offsides, with replays showing the defender’s toe beyond the last Portuguese defender.
Despite the disappointment, the final whistle was greeted with celebrations from the Colombian players and supporters alike.
The draw ensured Néstor Lorenzo’s side finished first in Group K with seven points, extending their impressive unbeaten run and reinforcing their status as one of the tournament’s dark horses.
Portugal also progressed comfortably after collecting five points from three matches.
Roberto Martínez’s experienced squad will now prepare for a heavyweight knockout clash with Croatia, while Colombia face Ghana.
