Balogun, Tillman fire 10-man U.S past Bosnia into World Cup last 16
The United States booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a composed 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday, overcoming a second-half red card to produce another assured performance in front of a jubilant home crowd at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
Goals from Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman secured only the second World Cup knockout-stage victory in U.S. history, setting up an enticing last-16 showdown against Belgium.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side dominated possession from the opening whistle and controlled the tempo throughout much of the contest, although Bosnia initially proved difficult to break down with a disciplined defensive display.
The Americans created the better opportunities during the first half, with Christian Pulisic and Balogun both threatening before the latter thought he had opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark.
However, the striker's well-taken finish was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
The breakthrough finally arrived on the stroke of halftime.
Malik Tillman attempted to thread a pass into the penalty area, and after a pair of fortunate deflections the ball fell kindly to Balogun.
The striker kept his composure, calmly slotting past Nikola Vasilj to hand the hosts a deserved 1-0 advantage heading into the interval.
Bosnia emerged with greater attacking intent after the restart, but struggled to create meaningful chances against a well-organized American defence led by veteran captain Tim Ream and goalkeeper Matt Freese, who was rarely called into serious action.
The complexion of the match changed dramatically in the 64th minute when Balogun’s challenge on Tarik Muharemovic was upgraded to a straight red card following a VAR review.
The dismissal forced the United States to play the final half-hour with 10 men and offered Bosnia renewed hope of mounting a comeback.
Instead, the numerical disadvantage appeared to galvanize the co-hosts.
The United States defended with discipline, pressed intelligently, and continued to threaten on the counterattack while Bosnia struggled to capitalize on their extra man.
Any lingering doubts over the outcome disappeared in the 82nd minute when Tillman produced a moment of quality.
The PSV Eindhoven midfielder curled a superb free-kick over the defensive wall and beyond the fingertips of Vasilj to double the Americans’ lead and ignite celebrations among the home supporters.
Bosnia pushed forward during 10 minutes of stoppage time but failed to seriously trouble Freese as the United States comfortably saw out the victory.
Pochettino’s side finished with another mature display that highlighted both their attacking quality and defensive resilience, even after losing their leading scorer to dismissal.
The victory sends the United States into a mouthwatering Round of 16 encounter against Belgium, who completed a dramatic comeback to eliminate Senegal after extra time.
