PHOTOS: Al Ahly beat Police VC to claim 17th CAVB Men’s Club Championship title
Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC were crowned champions of the CAVB Men’s Club Championship 2026 after a commanding straight-sets victory over Rwanda’s Police VC in the final held in Kigali.
The decisive match of the 47th edition of Africa’s premier club volleyball competition took place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at BK Arena.
Al Ahly SC secured the title with a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) in a contest that lasted one hour and 21 minutes, underlining their dominance throughout the tournament.
This victory marked a historic milestone for Al Ahly SC, as they claimed their 17th continental title, further cementing their status as the most successful club in African volleyball history.
The Egyptian side completed the tournament unbeaten, without dropping a single match or set—a remarkable display of consistency and excellence.
Despite the defeat, Police VC delivered a historic performance of their own, reaching the final for the first time and becoming the first Rwandan club to achieve such a feat.
Their journey captivated home fans and highlighted the rapid growth of volleyball in Rwanda.
In the final, Police VC’s Elphas Maikuva Makuto led all scorers with 17 points, while Al Ahly’s José Israel Masso Alvarez contributed 13 points.
Across the tournament, Makuto amassed an impressive 141 points, compared to Masso Alvarez’s 78, showcasing his individual brilliance.
Hosts Rwanda enjoyed a successful campaign overall.
Rwanda Energy Group VC (REG VC) secured third place after defeating Egypt’s Petrojet Sporting Club 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 13-25, 25-17).
Two Rwandan teams finished in the top three, marking a significant achievement for the host nation in its debut as tournament organizer.
Other Rwandan representatives included Kepler VC, who finished seventh, and APR VC, who placed 11th among the 24 participating teams.
Individual awards reflected both Egyptian dominance and Rwandan impact.
Al Ahly’s Abdelrahman Elhossiny Eissa was named Most Valuable Player after scoring 60 points during the tournament.
He was joined in the best team selection by teammates and standout Rwandan players, including REG VC’s Matui Nicholas and Police VC’s Frank Shyaka, Melly Brian Kiprui, and Irakoze Alain.
The 10-day championship brought together 24 top clubs from across Africa, providing a platform for elite competition and talent development.
Rwanda’s successful hosting of the event further demonstrated its growing reputation as a hub for international sporting events.
The final standings saw Al Ahly SC finish first, followed by Police VC in second place and REG VC in third, with Petrojet Sporting Club taking fourth position.
The 2026 edition of the CAVB Men’s Club Championship will be remembered for its high level of competition, historic achievements, and the continued rise of African volleyball on the continental stage.
