Mexico end 40-year knockout drought with convincing victory over Ecuador

Co-hosts Mexico reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in four decades after defeating Ecuador 2-0 in a composed and clinical Round of 32 encounter at Mexico City Stadium on Tuesday.

Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez in a dominant first half proved enough for Javier Aguirre’s side, who extended their remarkable defensive record by keeping a fourth consecutive clean sheet at the tournament.

The victory ended Mexico’s 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout-stage win and sparked jubilant celebrations among the home supporters at the iconic Mexico City Stadium.

The match began more than an hour later than scheduled because of thunderstorms and heavy rain in the Mexican capital, but the delay did little to dampen the atmosphere as thousands of fans created a vibrant backdrop for one of the tournament's most anticipated Round of 32 ties.

Mexico started aggressively and should have taken the lead inside the opening 10 minutes.

Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez headed narrowly wide before teenage sensation Gilberto Mora fired over as the hosts pinned Ecuador deep inside their own half.

Ecuador weathered the early pressure and nearly punished Mexico in the 18th minute when John Yeboah skipped past César Montes before striking the post with a clever effort.

That proved to be the South Americans’ best opportunity of the evening.

Mexico responded emphatically four minutes later.

Quiñones initiated the move inside his own half before racing onto a perfectly weighted through ball.

The winger burst past Willian Pacho, cut inside and rifled a powerful finish into the roof of the net to send the home crowd into celebration and give El Tri a deserved lead.

The co-hosts doubled their advantage in the 31st minute through an excellent combination between their two forwards.

After Ecuador failed to clear their lines, Quiñones showed great composure to return Jiménez’s pass, allowing the Fulham striker to curl a precise finish into the top corner for his first goal of the knockout stage.

Quiñones capped an outstanding first-half display with both a goal and an assist.

Ecuador attempted to mount a response after the interval, introducing fresh attacking options including Kevin Rodríguez and Ángelo Preciado, but Mexico’s disciplined defence, marshalled by Johan Vásquez and César Montes, comfortably dealt with the aerial bombardment and limited the visitors to few clear-cut opportunities.

Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel was called into action only occasionally, producing an excellent save to deny Yeboah before confidently collecting a series of crosses as Ecuador struggled to break through Mexico’s well-organised back line.

Mexico also came close to adding a third goal when substitute Orbelín Pineda curled a late effort narrowly wide.

Frustration boiled over for Ecuador in stoppage time when defender Piero Hincapié was sent off following a VAR review for confronting substitute Santiago Giménez, ending any hopes of a late comeback.

Moments later, referee Slavko Vinčić brought the contest to an end, confirming a famous night for Mexican football.

Having become the second co-host nation to reach the Round of 16, Mexico will now face either England or DR Congo as they continue their pursuit of a first World Cup quarter-final appearance since 1986.

Ecuador, meanwhile, exit the tournament after their first knockout appearance in 20 years, unable to build on an encouraging group-stage campaign.
