England seal top spot with dominant victory over Panama

England secured top spot in Group L at the FIFA World Cup after second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane sealed a deserved 2-0 victory over Panama at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel’s side entered the match knowing victory would guarantee first place regardless of events elsewhere, but they were forced to work hard by a disciplined Panama team that defended resolutely for more than an hour before England's superior quality finally told.

The Three Lions dominated possession from the opening whistle and created the better opportunities throughout the first half.

Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka repeatedly stretched Panama’s back line with their pace and movement, while Jude Bellingham orchestrated attacks from midfield.

However, goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera produced several important saves to frustrate England, including smart stops to deny Rashford and Saka as Panama reached the interval with the score still goalless.

Panama, already eliminated after defeats to Ghana and Croatia, refused to simply make up the numbers.

Thomas Christiansen’s side looked dangerous on the counterattack and briefly threatened to spring a surprise, with Jordan Pickford called into action on several occasions.

England also had to remain alert defensively as the Central American side searched for their first goal of the tournament.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 62nd minute.

Saka delivered an inviting corner into the penalty area, where Bellingham reacted quickest to hook a brilliant left-footed finish into the bottom corner for his second goal of the tournament.

The strike lifted the pressure from England and rewarded their persistence after a patient attacking display.

Only five minutes later, England doubled their advantage through captain Harry Kane.

Rashford’s excellent long pass released Bellingham, whose intelligent first touch created space before he delicately lifted the ball into Kane’s path.

The Bayern Munich striker powered a close-range header beyond Mosquera to score his second goal of the World Cup and become England’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament.

Bellingham’s outstanding performance earned widespread praise, with the midfielder finishing the evening with a goal and an assist.

At just 22 years and 363 days old, he became the youngest England player since records began in 1966 to both score and provide an assist in the same World Cup match.

Although Panama thought they had grabbed a late consolation through José Fajardo, the effort was correctly ruled out for offside after a tight decision, ensuring England kept a valuable clean sheet.

The victory sees England finish top of Group L with seven points, setting up a Round of 32 showdown against Senegal.

Croatia’s 2-1 victory over Ghana secured second place in the group, while Ghana finished third despite a spirited campaign.

Panama departed the tournament without a point or a goal but earned admiration for another disciplined display against one of the competition’s favourites.

England, meanwhile, head into the knockout rounds as Tuchel’s side continue their pursuit of a first World Cup title since 1966.
