Egypt edge Australia on penalties to reach historic World Cup last 16
Egypt reached the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time after defeating Australia 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time at Dallas Stadium on Friday.
The Pharaohs, seven-time African champions, held their nerve from the spot with Mohamed Salah converting a composed Panenka before defender Hossam Abdelmaguid struck the decisive penalty after Australia’s teenage defender Lucas Herrington blasted his effort against the crossbar.
Egypt had looked on course to settle the contest inside 90 minutes after Emam Ashour opened the scoring midway through the first half, only for an unfortunate own goal by Mohamed Hany to bring Australia back into the contest.
Australia started brightly and almost took the lead inside five minutes when Cristian Volpato unleashed a powerful long-range strike that crashed against the crossbar with goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir beaten.
Egypt gradually settled into the match and capitalized on sustained pressure in the 13th minute.
After Mohamed Salah’s clever free-kick created confusion inside the Australian area, Karim Hafez recovered possession and delivered a pinpoint cross that Ashour powered home with a commanding header for his second goal of the tournament.
The North Africans controlled possession for long periods but failed to extend their advantage before halftime, allowing Australia to remain within striking distance.
Egypt squandered a golden opportunity moments after the restart when Omar Marmoush raced clear on goal but dragged his effort wide from close range, a miss that would soon prove costly.
Australia equalized in the 55th minute through a slice of fortune.
A dangerous free-kick into the penalty area forced defender Mohamed Hany into an attempted clearance, but his header flew into his own net for his second own goal of the tournament, restoring parity at 1-1.
The Socceroos gained confidence after the equalizer, yet Egypt finished regulation time strongly.
Patrick Beach produced a magnificent save to deny Ramy Rabia’s powerful header before Harry Souttar made a crucial late block to prevent substitute Haissem Hassan from finding a dramatic winner.
Extra time brought further tension but few clear-cut chances.
Salah missed Egypt’s best opportunity when he fired over from close range, while Australia's substitute goalkeeper Mat Ryan was introduced specifically for the penalty shootout in a bold tactical move by coach Tony Popovic.
The gamble failed to pay off.
Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Salah and Abdelmaguid all converted confidently for Egypt.
Harry Souttar missed Australia’s opening kick before Herrington’s effort struck the bar, leaving Abdelmaguid to calmly fire home the winning penalty and spark jubilant celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.
The victory marks Egypt’s first-ever World Cup knockout triumph and sends Hossam Hassan’s side into the round of 16, where they will face either defending champions Argentina or surprise package Cape Verde.
