Ecuador stun Germany 2-1 to keep World Cup dream alive

Ecuador produced one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage on Thursday night, coming from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 at New York New Jersey Stadium and dramatically boost their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

The South American side entered the match knowing that only a victory would keep their qualification hopes alive after collecting just one point from their opening two matches.

Facing a Germany team that had already secured a place in the round of 32, Ecuador rose to the occasion with a spirited display full of determination and resilience.

Germany made the perfect start and appeared set for another comfortable evening when Leroy Sané struck after only two minutes.

Florian Wirtz cleverly found space inside the Ecuador penalty area before laying the ball off to Sané, who calmly fired a left-footed effort into the bottom corner beyond goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez.

The early goal threatened to derail Ecuador’s hopes, but Sebastián Beccacece’s men responded superbly.

Just seven minutes later, Pedro Vite won possession in midfield and fed Nilson Angulo, who unleashed a magnificent curling strike from outside the box that flew beyond Manuel Neuer and into the bottom corner.

The stunning effort was Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament and reignited belief among their supporters.

The equalizer transformed the match. Ecuador grew in confidence and began controlling large portions of possession, while Germany struggled to reproduce the attacking fluency that had helped them win their opening two matches.

Angulo, Vite and Moisés Caicedo dictated play in midfield, creating several uncomfortable moments for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.

Germany thought they had been handed a golden opportunity early in the second half when referee Mary Penso awarded a penalty following a challenge on Kai Havertz.

However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned due to a foul by Sané in the build-up, much to Ecuador’s relief.

As the match entered its final quarter, Ecuador continued to push forward in search of the goal they desperately needed.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 77th minute.

A corner delivery caused confusion inside the German penalty area, and Kevin Rodríguez’s flick-on found Gonzalo Plata, who reacted quickest to poke the ball past Neuer from close range and send Ecuador’s fans into celebration.

Germany attempted to mount a late comeback, introducing fresh attacking options and piling pressure on Ecuador’s defense.

Deniz Undav and Pascal Groß both came close, but Ecuador defended heroically. Joel Ordóñez, Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapié stood firm as wave after wave of German attacks were repelled.

After eight tense minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation among the Ecuador players and coaching staff.

The victory moved Ecuador onto four points and significantly improved their chances of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Despite the defeat, Germany finished top of Group E thanks to victories in their first two matches and a superior head-to-head record over Ivory Coast, who secured second place.

Ecuador’s fate now depends on results elsewhere, but their memorable triumph over one of world football’s giants has ensured their World Cup journey remains alive.
