Amad’s late strike earns Ivory Coast victory over Ecuador

Ivory Coast made a winning start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign after substitute Amad Diallo scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner to secure a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in a thrilling Group E encounter at Philadelphia Stadium on Sunday.

In a match filled with chances, near misses, and relentless intensity, the Elephants finally found the breakthrough when Manchester United winger Amad calmly swept home a left-footed finish after excellent work from defender Wilfried Singo.

The late goal handed Emerse Fae’s side three valuable points and strengthened their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

The contest was the first-ever meeting between Ivory Coast and Ecuador at senior international level, and it lived up to expectations from start to finish.

Ecuador, making their fifth World Cup appearance, started brightly and came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the first half.

John Yeboah rattled the crossbar with a superb curling effort before Alan Minda struck the woodwork again after being brilliantly set up by Pedro Vite.

Veteran captain Enner Valencia also wasted a good opportunity as the South Americans threatened throughout the opening period.

Ivory Coast responded with attacking intent of their own. Yan Diomande proved a constant danger down the right flank, while Nicolas Pépé and Franck Kessié helped create several openings.

Elye Wahi came closest for the African champions when his near-post effort crashed against the crossbar early in the second half.

The game appeared destined for a goalless draw until Singo surged forward from defence in the 90th minute and delivered a precise pass into the path of Amad.

The winger showed remarkable composure to guide his finish into the bottom corner, sparking celebrations among the Ivorian supporters.

Statistics reflected Ivory Coast’s slight superiority, with an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.68 compared to Ecuador’s 1.03.

For Ivory Coast, the victory continues a remarkable resurgence under Fae.

The Elephants are appearing at their fourth World Cup after previously competing in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

Despite producing legendary talents such as Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré, they have never advanced beyond the group stage.

Ecuador, meanwhile, are playing in their fifth World Cup after appearances in 2002, 2006, 2014 and 2022.

Their best performance came in Germany 2006, where they reached the Round of 16 before losing to England.

With Germany defeating Curaçao earlier in the day, the result leaves Ivory Coast well positioned heading into a crucial clash against the Germans, while Ecuador will look to bounce back when they face Curaçao in their next Group E fixture.
