Rwanda to host inaugural Acrobatics and Rhythmic Gymnastics competition

Rwanda’s gymnastics community will make history on June 14, 2026, with the inaugural Acrobatics and Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition, marking a major step in the sport’s development nationwide.

Organized by Kigali International Gymnastics Academy (KIGA) in partnership with the Rwanda Gymnastics Federation (FERWAGY), the competition will bring together over 100 young gymnasts from Kigali schools for a day of competition and talent development.

Set to be held at Iwacu Academy in Vision City, Gacuriro, the competition will feature Tiny Tots, Junior, Teen, and Senior athletes competing in AcroGym, Rhythmic Gymnastics, TeamGym, Floor Exercise, and exhibition performances.

The competition enables athletes to showcase technical precision, balance, flexibility, coordination, strength, artistry, and teamwork while allowing stakeholders to observe Rwanda’s growing gymnastics development.

The participating teams are Iwacu Academy, the International School of Kigali (ISK), Green Hills Academy, Bright Angels Academy, Doves International Montessori School (DIMS), La Colombière, and Wellspring Academy.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Pascal Uwayezu, Founder and Director of Kigali International Gymnastics Academy and chief organizer of the competition, emphasized the importance of competitive exposure for young athletes.

“Gymnastics is a sport that combines athletic excellence, discipline, creativity, and confidence. This competition will provide a valuable stage for our gymnasts to showcase the skills they have developed through dedication and consistent training while inspiring more young people to participate in the sport”, he said.

Uwayezu also encouraged parents, schools, sports stakeholders, and the wider community to attend and support the athletes, noting that strong community engagement is essential for nurturing future champions.

Founded with a mission to promote gymnastics education and athlete development, the Kigali International Gymnastics Academy (KIGA) has emerged as one of Rwanda’s leading gymnastics training institutions.

The academy focuses on developing fundamental movement skills, physical literacy, and competitive excellence among children and youth.

The Rwanda Gymnastics Federation (FERWAGY), the national governing body for gymnastics, is responsible for regulating, promoting, and developing gymnastics across the country.

Through grassroots programs, competitions, coaching development, and athlete pathways, FERWAGY continues to expand opportunities for participation and excellence at national and international levels.
