Netherlands held by Japan in thrilling 2-2 World Cup group F opener
The Netherlands were denied victory in dramatic fashion as Japan fought back twice to secure a 2-2 draw in an entertaining FIFA World Cup Group F clash at Dallas Stadium on Sunday night.
In a match that burst into life after a cagey first half, both sides showcased their quality and determination, leaving Group F wide open after the opening round of fixtures.
The Dutch entered the tournament with a proud World Cup pedigree.
This is their 12th appearance at the global showpiece, having finished runners-up three times (1974, 1978 and 2010) without ever lifting the trophy.
They also arrived unbeaten in their previous 16 World Cup group-stage matches.
Japan, meanwhile, came into the competition seeking to build on their impressive performances in recent editions.
The Samurai Blue famously defeated both Germany and Spain at the 2022 World Cup before exiting in the Round of 16 on penalties against Croatia.
Despite being one of Asia’s most consistent teams, Japan have never advanced beyond the Round of 16 in their World Cup history.
Before kick-off, the head-to-head record heavily favoured the Netherlands.
The two nations had met three times previously, with the Dutch winning twice and drawing once.
Their only previous World Cup encounter came in South Africa in 2010 when Wesley Sneijder’s strike secured a 1-0 Dutch victory.
After a cautious opening 45 minutes in Dallas, the breakthrough finally arrived early in the second half.
Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch delivered a pinpoint cross in the 50th minute and captain Virgil van Dijk powered home a header to put Ronald Koeman’s side ahead.
Japan responded superbly just seven minutes later.
Takefusa Kubo found Keito Nakamura on the edge of the area, and the winger’s effort took a slight deflection before beating Bart Verbruggen to level the contest at 1-1.
The Dutch restored their advantage on 64 minutes through a moment of brilliance from Crysencio Summerville.
Receiving another Gravenberch assist, the winger curled a magnificent left-footed effort beyond Zion Suzuki to make it 2-1.
Just when it appeared the Netherlands were heading for all three points, Japan produced a late response.
Substitute Junya Ito delivered an excellent corner in the 89th minute, Koki Ogawa flicked the ball on, and Daichi Kamada guided a header into the net to spark wild celebrations among the Japanese supporters.
The dramatic equaliser ensured Japan extended their unbeaten run and earned a valuable point against one of Europe’s traditional heavyweights.
Gravenberch was arguably the standout performer, registering two assists for the Netherlands, while Japan once again demonstrated the resilience and fighting spirit that have made them one of Asia’s most respected football nations.
The Netherlands will next face Sweden, while Japan take on Tunisia as the battle for qualification from Group F continues.
