Egypt outlast New Zealand for historic first FIFA World Cup victory

Egypt produced a memorable second-half comeback to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G clash at BC Place in Vancouver, securing the Pharaohs’ first-ever victory at the World Cup finals.

The match began brightly for New Zealand, who shocked their African opponents after just 15 minutes when defender Finn Surman rose highest to head home Tim Payne’s corner.

The goal gave the All Whites a deserved lead and raised hopes of what would have been their first World Cup win.

However, Egypt responded impressively after the break, showing the quality and experience that have made them one of Africa’s most respected football nations.

Mostafa Zico levelled the score with a powerful header in the 58th minute before turning provider nine minutes later, setting up captain Mohamed Salah to complete the turnaround.

Substitute Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” sealed the victory in the 82nd minute with another headed effort, handing Egypt a famous 3-1 triumph.

The result was historic for Egypt, who had previously played eight World Cup matches without recording a win.

The Pharaohs are appearing in their fourth FIFA World Cup after previous participations in 1934, 1990 and 2018.

They remain one of Africa’s most successful national teams, having won a record seven Africa Cup of Nations titles under the umbrella of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

New Zealand, meanwhile, belong to the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and are widely regarded as Oceania’s strongest national side.

The All Whites have won multiple OFC Nations Cup titles and are making another notable appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Their most celebrated World Cup campaign came in 2010 when they finished unbeaten, drawing against Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay, although they narrowly missed progression to the knockout rounds.

Egypt are coached by Hossam Hassan, one of the greatest players in Egyptian football history.

As a player, Hassan earned more than 170 international caps and helped Egypt win three Africa Cup of Nations titles in 1986, 1998 and 2006.

Since taking charge of the national team, he has focused on combining experienced stars with emerging talents.

New Zealand are led by Darren Bazeley, a former professional footballer who represented clubs in England before moving into coaching.

Bazeley has played a key role in developing New Zealand’s next generation of players and guiding the team back onto the global stage.

With the victory, Egypt moved to the top of Group G and boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds for the first time, while New Zealand must now seek a positive result against Belgium to keep their qualification ambitions alive.
