Young Rwandan Karatekas Shine in Zambia, Win Five Medals at Kyokushin World Championships.

Three Rwandan Karatekas impressed at the inaugural Kyokushin Kenbukaikan World Championships in Lusaka, Zambia, clinching a total of five medals — including three golds — in a strong display of skill and discipline.

The tournament, which brought together competitors from several countries, ran from October 23 to 26, 2026.

Rwanda was represented by three Karatekas namely Twagirumukiza Salvien (18), Ndayizeye Prince (17), and Irampaye Fred (14), all coached by Rurangayire Guy Didier, who also serves as the President of the Japan Karate Association-Rwanda (JKA-Rwanda).

On Friday, Irampaye Fred won a gold medal in Kata in the under-14 category, Twagirumukiza Salvien won gold in Kata in the 17–18, while Ndayizeye Prince earned a silver medal in the same category.

On Saturday, the competition continued with team Kata events as well as Kumite, based on weight categories.

Rwanda added two more medals on that day — a gold medal in team Kata and a bronze medal won by Irampaye Fred, who finished third in Kumite for boys aged 14–15 weighing under 55 kilograms.

The tournament was attended by the Rwandan Ambassador to Zambia, Hon. Bugingo Emmanuel, who encouraged and motivated the Rwandan Karatekas.

Speaking after the competition, JKA-Rwanda President Rurangayire Guy Didier expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance.

“Our Karatekas showed great strength and discipline,” he said.

“We learned a lot from this experience and will keep improving our training. In Kata we clearly dominated — Kumite is where we still have room to grow.” He added

The impressive performance highlights Rwanda’s growing presence on the international Karate scene and reflects the promise of the next generation of fighters developing under JKA-Rwanda.
