Prince Andrew detained in UK amid Jeffrey Epstein scandal

Prince Andrew, born Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, according to UK media accounts.

The development marks a dramatic new chapter in the continuing controversy surrounding the former senior royal, who was stripped of his honorary military titles and royal patronages last year over his association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

In a statement released on Thursday, Thames Valley Police confirmed that a man in his sixties from Norfolk had been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged misconduct in public office.

Officers are also conducting searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk. The police did not name the suspect, citing national guidance, and emphasized that the individual remains in custody.

Authorities further cautioned that the case is now active, warning media outlets and the public to avoid publishing material that could risk contempt of court.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said that after a thorough assessment of the allegations, police had decided to formally open an investigation.

He stressed the importance of safeguarding the integrity and objectivity of the process while working with partner agencies.

Acknowledging the intense public interest surrounding the case, Wright said updates would be provided when appropriate.

The arrest follows mounting scrutiny over Andrew’s past interactions with Epstein.

Previously released documents suggested that in 2010 Andrew shared reports with Epstein concerning countries such as Vietnam and Singapore following official trips undertaken during his time as the UK’s trade envoy.

In one confidential memo, he reportedly sought Epstein’s opinion on potential investment opportunities in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that Andrew should cooperate fully with US authorities in their ongoing investigations related to Epstein.

“No one is above the law,” Starmer stated, reinforcing the principle that all individuals, regardless of status, are subject to legal accountability.

The reported arrest represents an unprecedented moment for a figure once considered one of the most prominent members of the British royal family and widely regarded as a favorite of the late queen.

Once entrusted with high-profile public roles, Andrew’s reputation has steadily deteriorated due to his association with Epstein and the subsequent legal and public relations fallout.

The move is another significant blow to the image and branding of the monarchy.

The royal family had indicated just last week that it would cooperate fully with any police investigation involving Andrew.
