Fabrice Shema launches FIFA talent development scouting course

President of the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), Fabrice Shema, has officially inaugurated the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) Scouting Course, a major initiative designed to strengthen talent identification and youth player development across Rwanda.

The course brings together 25 coaches from different parts of the country, providing them with an opportunity to enhance their scouting and player assessment skills.

The program is part of ongoing efforts by FERWAFA and FIFA to establish a more structured and effective football development system capable of identifying promising young players at an early stage and guiding them toward elite-level football.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Shema emphasized the importance of talent identification in the growth of Rwandan football.

He noted that discovering and nurturing young players remains one of the key foundations for building successful national teams and competitive clubs in the future.

The training program is being conducted under FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme, a global initiative launched to help member associations improve their youth development structures.

The scheme seeks to create clear pathways for talented players, ensuring that potential stars receive the guidance, coaching, and opportunities needed to reach their full potential.

Throughout the course, participants will receive both theoretical and practical training in modern scouting methods.

Topics include player observation, talent assessment, data collection, performance analysis, and long-term player development strategies.

Coaches will also learn how to identify technical, tactical, physical, and psychological attributes that distinguish talented young footballers.

The initiative is expected to play a significant role in improving Rwanda’s football ecosystem by strengthening scouting networks across the country.

With trained scouts and coaches operating at grassroots level, more talented players can be discovered in schools, academies, and local competitions before being integrated into advanced development programs.

FERWAFA believes that investing in education and capacity building for coaches is essential to achieving long-term success.

By equipping local football professionals with internationally recognized scouting techniques, the federation aims to create a sustainable system that continuously produces talented players capable of representing Rwanda at regional, continental, and global competitions.

The course also aligns with Rwanda’s broader ambitions of raising the standard of football and increasing the country's competitiveness on the international stage.

Improved talent identification and development structures are seen as critical factors in producing future generations of players who can excel in professional football.

Participants are expected to return to their respective regions after completing the course and apply their newly acquired knowledge in identifying and developing young talent.

Their work will contribute to expanding Rwanda’s talent pool and strengthening the foundations of the national football system.
