Eight institutional teams to feature in ARPST 2026 Genocide Memorial Tournament

As Rwanda marks the 32nd commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi, the Association of Workers’ Sports in Rwanda (ARPST), in partnership with the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOC), has organized the 5th edition of the Genocide Memorial Sports Tournament in remembrance of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The tournament, which is part of the 100 days of commemoration, is designed to honour former employees and sports personalities who lost their lives during the Genocide against the Tutsi.

It also serves as a platform for unity, remembrance, and sports development among public institutions and organisations in Rwanda.

The competition brings together different institutions competing in football, volleyball, and basketball in both men’s and women’s categories.

This year’s edition features several competitive knockout fixtures scheduled between 5 and 12 June 2026, with home-and-away legs determining which teams will advance to the finals.

In men’s football Category A, RAC will host CHUB this Friday at Ruyenzi Stadium at 3:30pm for the first leg, while the return leg will be played on 12 June 2026.

In men’s volleyball Category A, CHUB will host RAC at CSK A court at 3:00pm, with the second leg scheduled for 12 June 2026.

In men’s basketball Category A, RAC will face RTDA at CSK B court at 5:00pm, with RAC hosting the opening leg before the return fixture on 12 June 2026.

In men’s football Category B, Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) will take on DGIE at Bugesera Stadium at 3:30pm.

RBC will host the first leg before the second leg scheduled for 12 June 2026.

In men’s volleyball Category B, RwandAir will take on NISR at CSK A court at 5:00pm, with RwandAir hosting the first leg and the return summit set for 12 June 2026.

In men’s basketball Category B, NISR will face DGIE at MPANO RC Rebero at 3:30pm, with NISR hosting the opening leg. DGIE will host the second leg on 12 June 2026.

In women’s volleyball Category B, NISR will also meet DGIE at MPANO RC Rebero at 3:30pm under the same home-and-away format, with fixtures concluding on 12 June 2026.

Last year, the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) team won the women’s volleyball title after defeating the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) in the final with a 3–0 sets victory.

In the men’s category, the Rwanda Immigration team claimed the championship after overcoming the Rwanda Ministry of Health team with the same 3–0 scoreline.

ARPST emphasized that the tournament continues to play a vital role in promoting remembrance through sport, fostering unity among institutions, and encouraging teamwork and physical well-being among workers across the country.

The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi began on April 7, 1994, following the assassination of then-President Juvénal Habyarimana.

Over a period of 100 days, more than one million people, predominantly Tutsi, were systematically killed by extremist militias and government forces.

The Genocide against the Tutsi ended in July 1994 when the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), led by Paul Kagame, stopped the massacres and liberated the country.

Today, Rwanda continues to promote remembrance, justice, and reconciliation while ensuring that the history and lessons of the genocide are preserved for future generations.
