Cricket: ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy teams take part in Rwanda’s Umuganda

Teams and officials participating in the inaugural ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy took part in Rwanda’s monthly community service activity, Umuganda, demonstrating a powerful blend of sport, culture, and social responsibility.

Held this Saturday morning in Rugende, Rusororo Sector, Gasabo District, the Umuganda brought together players and officials from Italy, the United States of America, Vanuatu, Nepal, and hosts Rwanda.

The participants worked side by side with local residents, engaging in community cleaning activities while embracing Rwanda’s long-standing tradition of collective action.

The event was attended by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Sports Rwego Ngarambe, Gasabo District Executive Administrator Bernard Bayasese, and Vice President of the Rwanda Cricket Association Sonia Uwimana, alongside representatives from the Rwanda National Police and other institutions.

Participants expressed admiration for Rwanda’s commitment to cleanliness and unity, noting that Umuganda offered them a firsthand understanding of the country’s reputation for environmental stewardship.

Many described the experience as both inspiring and educational, highlighting the importance of community engagement beyond the field of play.

The ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy marks a significant milestone in the development of women’s cricket, providing emerging cricket nations with a competitive platform to grow the game globally.

Hosted in Rwanda, this inaugural edition brings together developing cricketing nations, offering players international exposure and an opportunity to strengthen their technical and tactical skills.

Organized under the guidance of the International Cricket Council, the tournament underscores a broader commitment to expanding women’s participation in cricket, particularly in associate and developing member countries.

It also positions Rwanda as an emerging hub for cricket in Africa, following sustained investments in infrastructure, grassroots development, and international hosting capabilities.

As matches continue, the ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy is expected to deliver not only exciting cricket but also lasting connections among nations, leaving a legacy that extends well beyond the boundary ropes.
