Tennis: Alcaraz topples Djokovic to claim historic Australian Open title

Carlos Alcaraz made tennis history by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final to become the youngest man ever to complete a career Grand Slam.

The 22-year-old Spaniard sealed his maiden Melbourne title with a four-set victory, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, on Rod Laver Arena, denying Djokovic a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam crown.

Already a two-time champion at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, Alcaraz completed the set of all four major singles titles at just 22 years and 272 days.

In doing so, he eclipsed Don Budge’s 87-year-old record and became the youngest male player in tennis history to achieve the Career Grand Slam, surpassing legends such as Rod Laver, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Djokovic himself.

The final was a clash of generations. Djokovic, who reached his first Australian Open final in 2008 when Alcaraz was just four years old, dominated the opening set with his trademark precision.

However, momentum shifted early in the second set after a fortunate net cord helped Alcaraz secure a crucial break of serve.

From that point on, the world No 1 grew in confidence, while Djokovic’s level dipped.

Alcaraz controlled the match with his variety, athleticism and relentless intensity, breaking Djokovic again in the third set and resisting a fierce challenge in the fourth.

Despite Djokovic’s physical struggles and a valiant effort to extend the contest, Alcaraz held firm, collapsing to the court in celebration after his opponent’s final forehand sailed long.

It marked the first time Djokovic had lost an Australian Open final after 10 previous victories at Melbourne Park.

Nevertheless, the Serb showed his trademark sportsmanship in defeat, joking in his post-match speech and hinting at uncertainty over his future while thanking fans for their support.

After lifting the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, an emotional Alcaraz paid tribute to his team, describing the journey as a “rollercoaster” and promising to return stronger next year.

His triumph further underlined the changing of the guard in men’s tennis, with Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner now having won the last nine Grand Slam titles between them.

The victory not only cements Alcaraz’s place among the sport’s greats but also signals the arrival of a new era at the very top of men’s tennis.
