Amavubi move camp to Egypt after Morocco friendlies cancelled

The Rwanda National Team, Amavubi, has relocated its training camp from Morocco to Egypt following the cancellation of two international friendly matches that were scheduled to take place during the FIFA June 2026 international window.

The friendlies, which were set to see Rwanda face Tanzania and Comoros in Marrakech, Morocco, were called off after the Moroccan football authorities informed the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) that the matches had been declared unauthorized due to security concerns which is unidentified.

According to FERWAFA, the federation received the communication after some members of the Amavubi delegation had already arrived in Marrakech on June 1, 2026, to begin preparations for the upcoming international fixtures and the AFCON 2027 qualification campaign.

In an official statement, FERWAFA expressed regret over the development but emphasized that the situation was beyond its control.

The federation also stated that it respects the decision taken by the host country’s authorities.

Despite the cancellation of the friendlies, Rwanda’s preparations for future international competitions remain firmly on track.

FERWAFA confirmed that the team’s training camp has been moved to Cairo, Egypt, where players and technical staff will continue their preparations from June 4 to June 11, 2026.

The training camp forms part of the federation’s broader efforts to ensure that Amavubi are fully prepared for their upcoming international assignments, including the AFCON 2027 qualification campaign and future FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

The technical team, working closely with FERWAFA, has developed a comprehensive training program aimed at improving the squad’s fitness, tactical awareness, and overall readiness for competitive action.

Prior to the cancellation, the friendly matches against Tanzania and Comoros were expected to provide valuable match experience and an opportunity for the coaching staff to assess the team’s progress.

Although those fixtures will no longer take place, the federation remains committed to maximizing the FIFA international window through intensive training and preparation in Egypt.

FERWAFA also confirmed that all logistical arrangements for the Cairo camp have been finalized to ensure a smooth transition for the team.

Players have been urged to remain focused, report on time, and continue following the guidance of the coaching staff as preparations intensify.

The federation thanked all stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to support the national team’s preparations and ensure that the delegation remains focused despite the unexpected changes.

As Amavubi continue their journey toward future continental and global competitions, the move to Egypt demonstrates Rwanda’s determination to maintain momentum and make the most of every opportunity to strengthen the national team.
