APR FC’s CECAFA Kagame Cup legacy built on three historic triumphs (Photos)

APR FC have established themselves as one of the most successful clubs in the history of the CECAFA Kagame Club Championship, becoming Rwanda’s most decorated representative in the regional competition with three titles won in 2004, 2007 and 2010.

The Rwandan champions made their breakthrough in the tournament in 2004, when they claimed their first-ever CECAFA Kagame Cup trophy on home soil.

APR FC faced Kenya’s Ulinzi Stars twice during that campaign, first in the group stage and later in the final.

In the group stage on 28 April 2004 at Amahoro Stadium, the two sides played to a 1-1 draw.

Mark Sirengo scored for APR FC in the 49th minute, while Michael Baraza equalised for Ulinzi Stars in the 84th minute.

They met again in the final on 9 May 2004, with APR FC dominating proceedings to secure a 3-1 victory and lift their first regional title.

Ulinzi Stars took an early lead through Sammy Simiyu in the 10th minute, but APR FC responded through Olivier Karekezi (13’) before Jimmy Gatete scored twice (49’ & 70’), including a penalty, to secure the championship.

Three years later, APR FC repeated their success in the 2007 CECAFA Kagame Cup, again overcoming a team they had faced earlier in the competition.

Uganda’s URA FC defeated APR FC 3-0 in the final group match on 14 January 2007, with goals from Philip Obwiny, Fred Okello and Patrick Ochan.

However, APR FC had already qualified for the knockout stage after finishing top of Group A with nine points.

The two sides met again in the final on 20 January 2007, where APR FC took revenge with a 2-1 victory.

Abbas Rasou and Twite Mbuyu scored in the opening 11 minutes to put APR FC in control, while David Kiwanuka’s stoppage-time goal was only a consolation for URA FC.

Under coach Andia Mfutila, APR FC secured their second CECAFA Kagame Cup title.

APR FC’s most memorable campaign came in 2010, when they lifted the trophy for a third time in front of their home supporters in Kigali.

In the final against Ethiopian giants St. George on 29 May 2010 at Amahoro Stadium, the match remained goalless during normal time before APR FC scored twice in extra time.

Malawi international Chiukepo Msowoya broke the deadlock in the 92nd minute, while Victor Nyirenda added the second goal four minutes later to seal a 2-0 victory.

On their way to the 2010 title, APR FC defeated Burundi’s Vital’O 2-1, crushed Djibouti Telecom 6-1, overcame Tanzania’s Simba SC 2-1 in the quarter-finals, beat Kenya’s Sofapaka 1-0 in the semi-finals and finished unbeaten with victory over St. George in the final.

Msowoya was the tournament’s top scorer with seven goals.

APR FC’s regional success has continued in recent editions, with the club winning their opening matches in 2019 and 2024.

They defeated Uganda’s Proline FC 1-0 in 2019 through Thierry Manzi’s goal, before recording another 1-0 victory against Tanzania’s Singida Big Stars in 2024, thanks to Nigerian striker Victor Mbaoma.

Established in 1974, the CECAFA Kagame Club Championship remains one of Africa’s oldest regional club competitions.

It brings together leading teams from the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) region, including clubs from Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Burundi, Somalia, Djibouti and South Sudan.

The tournament was originally known as the CECAFA Club Championship before receiving sponsorship from Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame in 2002, becoming the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

Tanzania’s clubs have dominated the competition historically, with Simba SC being the most successful side, having won the trophy a record six times.

Kenya’s Gor Mahia and Uganda’s KCCA FC are also among the tournament’s most decorated clubs, while APR FC remains Rwanda’s most successful representative with three titles.
