FIFA World Cup 2026: Germany thrash Curacao 7-1 in statement opening victory
Germany positioned themselves as serious contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a ruthless 7-1 victory over tournament debutants Curacao in their Group E opener at Houston Stadium on Sunday night.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side produced an attacking masterclass, overcoming an early scare to secure one of the biggest wins of the tournament so far and underline their ambitions of lifting a fifth world title.
The four-time world champions took just six minutes to break the deadlock when Felix Nmecha curled home a superb first-time finish after being picked out by Florian Wirtz.
Germany continued to dominate possession and create chances, looking capable of scoring with almost every attack.
Curacao stunned the heavily favoured Europeans in the 21st minute when Livano Comenencia etched his name into his nation’s history books.
His deflected strike beat veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to become Curacao’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, sparking wild celebrations among the Caribbean supporters.
The underdogs’ joy was short-lived as Germany restored their advantage before halftime.
Defender Nico Schlotterbeck rose highest to head home Nathaniel Brown’s corner in the 38th minute before Kai Havertz calmly converted a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time after Felix Nmecha was brought down inside the area.
Any hopes of a Curacao comeback disappeared just two minutes after the restart.
Joshua Kimmich delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Jamal Musiala, who finished brilliantly to make it 4-1 and effectively seal the contest.
Germany’s relentless pressure continued throughout the second half.
Brown added his name to the scoresheet in the 68th minute after a clever assist from substitute Deniz Undav, before the latter made it six with a close-range finish ten minutes later.
Havertz completed the scoring in the 88th minute, racing onto Undav’s through ball and delicately lifting his effort over Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room to register his second goal of the evening and Germany's seventh.
The statistics reflected Germany’s complete dominance, with Nagelsmann’s men registering an expected goals (xG) figure of 3.91 compared to Curacao's 0.40.
Their fluid movement, creativity and clinical finishing overwhelmed a Curacao side making its historic World Cup debut.
While Curacao can take pride from scoring their first goal on football’s biggest stage, they were ultimately outclassed by a German team that looked sharp, confident and full of attacking quality.
Following this match, Germany turn their attention to a much tougher Group E encounter against Ivory Coast, while Curacao will seek a response when they face Ecuador in their second match of the tournament.
