Canada secure historic World Cup point in Bosnia draw

Canada claimed the first FIFA World Cup point in their history after substitute Cyle Larin scored late to secure a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in an entertaining Group B encounter at Toronto Stadium.

The co-hosts, playing in front of a passionate home crowd, dominated large periods of the contest but were forced to come from behind after Bosnia-Herzegovina striker Jovo Lukic opened the scoring midway through the first half.

Lukic, making a memorable impact on the biggest stage, headed home from close range in the 21st minute after a cleverly worked corner kick.

Sead Kolasinac flicked on Amar Memic’s delivery and Lukic was perfectly positioned to nod the ball over the line for his first international goal.

Despite falling behind, Canada remained the more adventurous side.

Jesse Marsch’s team controlled possession and created several opportunities, with Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi all threatening the Bosnian defence.

Their best chance came in the second half when Richie Laryea appeared certain to score, only for Kolasinac to produce a remarkable goal-line clearance that deflected onto the crossbar.

Canada’s persistence was eventually rewarded in the 78th minute. Just two minutes after coming off the bench, Larin finished a flowing move started by Ismael Koné and brilliantly assisted by Promise David.

The striker powered through his marker before firing into the corner to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.

The draw leaves both nations with a point as they prepare for crucial second group matches.

Canada will face Qatar, while Bosnia-Herzegovina take on Switzerland.

For Canada, the result carries historic significance. The North Americans lost all three matches in their World Cup debut in 1986 and suffered three more defeats during their return in Qatar in 2022.

This draw therefore represents the country's first point in seven World Cup matches.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, meanwhile, were appearing at only their second FIFA World Cup after debuting in Brazil in 2014.

On that occasion they lost their opening match 2-1 against Argentina before exiting in the group stage.

Their draw in Toronto means they remain without a World Cup victory but continue to build on an impressive qualification campaign.

The match also marked the first-ever meeting between Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina in senior international football.

With no previous head-to-head encounters between the two nations, both sides entered the contest as unfamiliar opponents. The inaugural clash ultimately ended level, with each nation claiming a point.

Canada remain without a World Cup opening-match victory, losing to France in 1986 and Belgium in 2022 before drawing 1-1 with Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2026.

Bosnia also drew their latest opener after losing 2-1 to Argentina in 2014.
