Kigali set the stage for a spectacular celebration of African volleyball on Wednesday evening as the 2026 CAVB Men’s Club Championship officially got underway with a vibrant opening ceremony at BK Arena.
The highly anticipated tournament, bringing together 24 of the continent’s top club teams, began in style with a colorful showcase that blended sport, culture, and unity.
Players, officials, sponsors, and fans filled the arena, creating an electric atmosphere that signaled the start of ten days of high-level competition.
The ceremony featured a lively parade of participating teams, captivating cultural performances, and remarks from key stakeholders, all underscoring Rwanda’s growing reputation as a hub for major sporting events.
The crowd erupted in applause when President Paul Kagame arrived midway through the opening match, adding further significance to the occasion.
Rwanda Volleyball Federation President Raphael Ngarambe expressed pride in hosting the championship, emphasizing its broader impact beyond the competition itself.
He highlighted the importance of community engagement, sportsmanship, and providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talent on a continental stage.
Ngarambe also extended gratitude to the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB), led by President Bouchra Hajij, for entrusting Rwanda with hosting rights, as well as to the government for its continued investment in sports development.
CAVB Vice President Gilbert Muvunyi praised Rwanda’s selection as host, describing the country as a symbol of resilience, unity, and ambition—values that reflect the spirit of the sports.
He noted that the championship represents more than just volleyball, serving as a celebration of African excellence and cooperation.
Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire welcomed participants and fans, expressing excitement at Rwanda becoming the first Sub-Saharan nation to host the prestigious men’s club championship.
She highlighted the diversity of cultures and aspirations represented at the event, calling it a powerful statement of the growth of volleyball across Africa.
Once the formalities concluded, attention quickly turned to the court, where hosts APR Volleyball Club delivered an emphatic performance in the tournament’s opening match.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, APR defeated Zimbabwe’s Black Rhinos in three straight sets, sending an early warning to their rivals.
The victory not only energized local supporters but also set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament.
Fans are expected to turn out in large numbers in the coming days to witness top-tier volleyball action at both BK Arena and Petit Stade.
As the championship unfolds, teams will battle for continental glory, culminating in a grand finale that will crown Africa’s best club.
With a strong start both on and off the court, Rwanda has already demonstrated its readiness to deliver a memorable tournament.
