Adel Amrouche wins FIFA case against FERWAFA, set to earn RWF530 million

Former Rwanda national team head coach Adel Amrouche has reportedly won a case against the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) on FIFA, with the Algerian-Belgian coach said to be seeking more than RWF530 million in compensation following the termination of his contract.

The reported FIFA decision adds another chapter to a short and turbulent spell that saw Amrouche take charge of Amavubi in March 2025 before leaving the position less than a year later.

Amrouche was appointed to replace German coach Torsten Frank Spittler, with FERWAFA turning to the experienced tactician as Rwanda sought to strengthen its campaign for qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His appointment was announced on March 2, 2025, with Eric Nshimiyimana named as first assistant and German coach Carolin Braun joining the technical team.

The 58-year-old coach arrived in Rwanda with considerable experience in African football.

Born in Kouba, Algeria, Amrouche holds both Algerian and Belgian nationality and has a UEFA Pro coaching licence.

Before taking charge of Amavubi, he had coached several national teams, including Burundi, Kenya, Libya, Botswana and Tanzania.

He guided Tanzania to qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, demonstrating his experience at international level.

His time with Amavubi, however, proved difficult.

By October 2025, Amrouche was under increasing pressure after Rwanda had managed only one victory in his first six matches.

The team’s World Cup qualification hopes were also fading as Rwanda struggled in Group C.

FERWAFA eventually announced in January 2026 that Amrouche would leave his position.

The federation cited a review of contractual obligations and what it described as serious contractual breaches under Article 17.2.

Other reports said he had managed only one victory in eight matches during his tenure.

Amrouche subsequently challenged the termination through FIFA’s football dispute-resolution system.

Reports emerging on August 24, 2026, now claim that FIFA has ruled in his favour and that he is entitled to compensation exceeding RWF530 million.

The reported figure has not yet been independently confirmed through a publicly available FIFA decision, so the precise amount and terms of the ruling remain subject to official confirmation.

The Amrouche’s case is significant because it comes after previous disputes involving former Amavubi coaches.

Rwanda has previously faced a FIFA compensation ruling over the dismissal of Johnny McKinstry, eventually settling the amount awarded to the Northern Irish coach.
