Trump puts Hormuz shipping mission on hold amid Tehran negotiations

Tensions across the Middle East remain high despite renewed diplomatic efforts, as the United States pauses part of its military operations while conflict and instability continue on multiple fronts.

US President Donald Trump announced a temporary halt to the military’s “Project Freedom” mission, which had been escorting commercial ships through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The decision, he said, reflects “great progress” in negotiations with Iran and opens a short window to finalise what he described as a “complete and final agreement” with representatives from Iran.

However, the US naval blockade of Iranian ports remains firmly in place, signaling Washington’s intent to maintain pressure while talks continue.

Tehran has responded cautiously. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused Washington of pursuing a “policy of maximum pressure” and insisting on unilateral demands that Iran cannot accept.

His remarks highlight the deep mistrust that continues to define relations between the two sides, even as diplomatic channels remain open with mediation reportedly supported by regional actors.

Meanwhile, tensions have spilled beyond the negotiating table.

The United Arab Emirates reported a second consecutive day of missile and drone attacks allegedly launched from Iranian territory, though Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps denied responsibility.

Iran, in turn, accused US forces of killing five civilians in hit on passenger boats in the Strait of Hormuz, rejecting claims that the vessels were linked to its military operations.

Beyond the Gulf, violence continues to intensify in the Levant. Israel has expanded its military campaign in southern Lebanon, carrying out air strikes on what it describes as Hezbollah-linked infrastructure.

Israeli forces say dozens of targets have been hit, including weapons depots and operational sites, while also issuing new evacuation orders for residents in multiple towns.

The ongoing offensive has already displaced more than a million people and caused significant civilian casualties, drawing widespread international concern.

Hezbollah claims it has retaliated with drone and rocket attacks on Israeli forces, underscoring the fragile nature of the ceasefire declared earlier.

Despite US efforts to contain the situation, clashes between the two sides persist, raising fears of a broader regional escalation.

Diplomatic activity has also intensified globally. China has stepped in as a key player, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi meeting his Iranian counterpart in Beijing.

Beijing has called US and Israeli military actions “illegitimate” and urged an immediate ceasefire, while also pushing Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to stabilise global trade.

As negotiations unfold and conflicts rage simultaneously, the region stands at a critical juncture.

Whether current diplomatic efforts can translate into lasting peace remains uncertain, but the coming days are likely to prove decisive for both regional stability and global security.
