Premier League: Opening weekend delivers early shocks and title-race intrigue

The 2026/27 Premier League season has burst into life with an opening weekend full of contrasting fortunes, as defending champions Arsenal made a winning start while Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur suffered early setbacks.

Arsenal set the tone on Friday night with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring before Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage, with captain Martin Ødegaard completing the victory shortly after half-time.

The result gave Mikel Arteta’s side an ideal start to their title defence and underlined their ambition to retain the crown.

Coventry, returning to the Premier League after 25 years, found the champions too strong but will take valuable experience from their first top-flight match under manager Frank Lampard.

Arsenal’s victory also followed their impressive 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City, giving the Gunners two major victories at the beginning of the new campaign.

One of the biggest surprises came at the MKM Stadium, where newly promoted Hull City defeated Manchester United 2-0.

Hull, back in the Premier League after nine years, secured a memorable victory through goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy. 

It was Hull’s first league win over United in 52 years and a disappointing beginning for Michael Carrick’s side after the optimism generated during pre-season.

Tottenham also endured a difficult opening day, losing 3-0 away to Brentford.

Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt put Brentford in control before Michael Kayode added a third early in the second half.

Despite significant investment during the summer transfer window, Spurs struggled to match Brentford’s intensity and cohesion.

Manchester City, meanwhile, began a new era under Enzo Maresca with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bournemouth.

Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead, but Marc Guéhi equalised before Joško Gvardiol struck in stoppage time to complete a comeback victory.

The result provided Maresca with three important points in his first Premier League match as City manager following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

Liverpool were held to a thrilling 2-2 draw by Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Newcastle twice took the lead, but Liverpool responded before Dominik Szoboszlai converted a 99th-minute penalty to rescue a point for Andoni Iraola in his first Premier League match in charge of the Reds.

Brighton produced the weekend’s biggest winning margin, thrashing Aston Villa 4-0.

Four goals before half-time, combined with João Gomes’ red card, left Unai Emery’s side with a difficult task as Brighton moved to the top of the early table on goal difference.

The opening round concludes on Monday, 24 August, when Chelsea visit Fulham at Craven Cottage in a west London derby.

The match will mark Xabi Alonso’s first Premier League game as Chelsea manager, while Fulham begin life under new boss Álvaro Arbeloa.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8pm UK time, or 9pm in Rwanda.
