Hervé Renard appointed Tunisia head coach after World Cup blow
Tunisia have turned to one of international football’s most experienced managers in a bid to rescue their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, appointing Hervé Renard as head coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after just one match of the tournament.
The decision came in the wake of Tunisia’s humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening World Cup fixture, a result that exposed serious defensive weaknesses and left the Eagles of Carthage facing an uphill battle to reach the knockout stage.
Reports indicate that Renard’s appointment was approved at the highest levels of the Tunisian state, with the Presidency of the Republic directly supporting the move.
Renard arrives with a reputation as one of football's greatest specialists in international management.
While his playing career was relatively modest, the Frenchman enjoyed spells as a defender with clubs including Cannes, Vallauris, and SC Draguignan before retiring in the late 1990s.
His greatest achievements, however, have come on the touchline.
Widely regarded as a master motivator, Renard became a household name after leading Zambia to a historic triumph at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), one of the greatest underdog stories in African football history.
Three years later, he guided Ivory Coast to the 2015 AFCON title, becoming the first coach to win the competition with two different nations.
His coaching journey has also included successful spells with Morocco, whom he led to their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 20 years in 2018, as well as managing Saudi Arabia, where he masterminded the famous 2-1 victory over eventual world champions Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.
More recently, he coached the French women's national team before returning to men's football.
Renard is known for his pragmatic and disciplined tactical philosophy.
Although he adapts according to available personnel, his teams often operate in a compact 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation.
Defensive organization, physical intensity, teamwork, and quick transitions are central to his playing style.
Above all, he is renowned for his ability to rebuild confidence and create a strong collective spirit within struggling squads.
That quality may prove crucial for Tunisia.
The team has conceded ten goals in its last two matches, including a 5-0 friendly defeat to Belgium before the World Cup.
Individual errors, defensive fragility, and a lack of confidence have left the squad in crisis.
According to Opta’s supercomputer, Tunisia currently have only an 11.39 percent chance of reaching the knockout stage.
Yet with group matches against Japan and the Netherlands still to come, qualification remains mathematically possible.
Renard’s task is not to solve every structural problem facing Tunisian football overnight.
His immediate mission is simpler but no less challenging ‘Inspire a wounded team’, restore belief, and attempt one of the most remarkable World Cup turnarounds in recent memory.
