FIFA Series 2026: Aruba and Liechtenstein advance to final, Tanzania suffers shock exit

Aruba and Liechtenstein secured spots in the FIFA Series 2026 final after strong opening-day performances in Kigali, thrilling fans and setting the stage for a highly anticipated championship showdown.

The 2026 FIFA Series officially kicked off today in Kigali, where series of international friendlies held at the Kigali Pelé Stadium.

The tournament offers lower-ranked national teams a rare platform to compete and gain valuable match experience on the global stage.

In the early kickoff, Aruba (FIFA rank 191) produced an emphatic 4-1 victory over Macao (193), showcasing attacking efficiency from the outset.

Carlito Fermina opened the scoring just five minutes in, finishing off a well-worked move assisted by Kymani Nedd.

Jaybriën Romano then took control of the game with a quick-fire brace in the 13th and 16th minutes, both goals highlighting Aruba’s sharp forward play and defensive lapses from Macao.

Leading 3-0 at halftime, Aruba maintained control in the second half. Conner van Kilsdonk added a fourth goal in the 66th minute to put the match beyond reach.

Macao managed a late consolation through Amancio in the 88th minute, but the result was never in doubt as Aruba sealed a comfortable win.

In the second match of the day, Tanzania (110) suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Liechtenstein (205) in a tightly contested encounter.

After a goalless first half, the decisive moment came in the 55th minute when Ferhat Saglam scored with a right-footed finish, assisted by Nicolas Hasler.

Despite multiple substitutions and attempts to respond, Tanzania struggled to break down a disciplined Liechtenstein defense.

The result marked a notable upset given the ranking gap between the two teams, underlining the unpredictable nature of international friendlies and the importance of match sharpness.

The matches are part of the FIFA Series, a relatively new initiative launched by FIFA in 2024.

The concept was introduced to provide more competitive opportunities for lower-ranked national teams that often face challenges in securing regular international fixtures outside major qualification campaigns.

By organizing mini-tournaments and friendly windows in centralized locations, FIFA aims to promote global football development and increase exposure for emerging football nations.

The 2026 FIFA Series spans eight host countries—Australia, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, and Uzbekistan—featuring matches across about nine cities worldwide.

The tournament is globally distributed, bringing international football action to Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and North America, enhancing competitive opportunities for emerging national teams.

Kigali is one of the selected host cities for the 2026 edition, reinforcing Rwanda’s growing reputation as a hub for international sports events.

Hosting the tournament not only boosts local football visibility but also supports infrastructure development and regional engagement in the sport.

With more fixtures scheduled during the FIFA Series window, teams will continue to use these matches to test squads, build cohesion, and gain valuable international experience ahead of future competitive campaigns.
