Cunha double powers Brazil past Haiti in crucial World Cup Victory

Brazil produced a commanding performance to defeat Haiti 3-0 at Philadelphia Stadium, strengthening their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

First-half goals from Matheus Cunha and Vinícius Júnior proved decisive as the five-time world champions secured their first victory of the tournament after opening with a draw against Morocco.

After a cautious start, Brazil found the breakthrough in the 23rd minute when Cunha benefited from a defensive mishap to put the Seleção ahead.

The Manchester United forward doubled the advantage 13 minutes later with a powerful finish following excellent work from Vinícius Júnior.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Vinícius added Brazil’s third goal after racing onto a precise pass from Lucas Paquetá and calmly beating Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide.

The second half was less eventful, with Brazil comfortably controlling possession and limiting Haiti’s attacking opportunities.

The Caribbean side showed determination and briefly threatened through Ricardo Ade, whose header forced an outstanding save from Alisson Becker.

Despite their efforts, Haiti struggled to create clear chances and finished the match without scoring.

The victory underlines Brazil’s status as one of football’s traditional powerhouses.

The South Americans are the most successful nation in FIFA World Cup history, having won the tournament five times in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.

They have also claimed nine Copa América titles and four FIFA Confederations Cups, making them one of the most decorated teams in international football.

Brazil are coached by legendary Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, one of the most successful coaches in football history.

Ancelotti has won league titles in Italy, England, France, Germany and Spain, while also capturing a record five UEFA Champions League trophies as a manager. His experience and tactical flexibility are expected to play a key role in Brazil’s pursuit of a sixth world title.

For Haiti, merely reaching the 2026 World Cup represents a historic achievement. The Grenadiers previously appeared only once at the tournament, in 1974.

Haiti’s greatest success came in 1973 when they won the CONCACAF Championship, the predecessor to today’s Gold Cup, becoming the first Caribbean nation to claim the regional crown.

They also finished runners-up at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup after an impressive campaign.

Haiti are led by French coach Sébastien Migné, who has built a reputation for developing competitive national teams across Africa and the Caribbean.

While he has not won major international trophies as a head coach, his work has been praised for improving organization and discipline within his squads.

Brazil will now prepare for a decisive Group C clash against Scotland, while Haiti face Morocco in their final group-stage match.
