Cape Verde hold Spain to historic World Cup draw in Atlanta

World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced one of the greatest upsets in FIFA World Cup history after holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their Group H opener at Atlanta Stadium on Monday.

Despite entering the match as overwhelming favorites, Spain were unable to find a way past inspired Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, whose heroic performance helped secure a historic point for the African nation in their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Spain dominated possession throughout the contest and registered 27 shots compared to Cape Verde’s six.

However, only seven efforts were on target and all were brilliantly dealt with by the 40-year-old goalkeeper.

Vozinha produced several outstanding saves to deny Mikel Oyarzabal, Aymeric Laporte and Ferran Torres, while Torres also struck the crossbar in Spain’s best chance of the match.

The result ended a frustrating evening for Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, who opted to leave star players Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams on the bench at the start.

Although Yamal was introduced in the second half and added urgency to Spain’s attack, Cape Verde’s disciplined defensive display remained unbroken.

Spain came into the tournament among the favorites to lift the trophy following their triumph at UEFA Euro 2024.

La Roja are also former world champions, having won the FIFA World Cup in 2010 in South Africa after defeating the Netherlands in the final.

In addition to their World Cup success, Spain have won four European Championship titles and the UEFA Nations League, cementing their place among international football's elite nations.

Historically, Spain’s best World Cup performance remains their 2010 triumph, while they also reached the semi-finals in 1950.

Before facing Cape Verde, Spain had participated in 14 World Cups and entered the tournament on an impressive unbeaten run in regulation time.

For Cape Verde, the draw represents arguably the greatest result in the nation’s football history.

The Blue Sharks qualified for the World Cup for the first time after topping their qualification group and arrived in the United States as one of Africa's surprise packages.

Although making their World Cup debut, Cape Verde have enjoyed notable success at the Africa Cup of Nations, reaching the knockout stages in three of their four appearances and establishing themselves as a rising force in African football.

Their best AFCON performances came with quarter-final appearances in 2013, 2021 and 2023.

The match was also the first-ever meeting between Spain and Cape Verde at senior international level, meaning the head-to-head record now stands at one draw from one encounter.

Led by the remarkable Vozinha, a single point may prove just as valuable as a victory as they continue their dream debut on football’s biggest stage.
