Cape Verde edge closer to knockouts after holding Uruguay

Cape Verde continued their remarkable FIFA World Cup 2026 journey with another stunning result, fighting back from behind to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against two-time world champions Uruguay at Miami Stadium on Monday.

The African debutants, believe to earn a valuable point that keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stage very much alive.

Cape Verde shocked Uruguay in the 21st minute when defensive midfielder Kevin Pina etched his name into the nation's football history books.

The midfielder unleashed a powerful free-kick from over 30 yards that flew into the bottom corner, becoming Cape Verde’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goalscorer.

Uruguay, however, responded strongly. After creating several opportunities, Maxi Araújo headed home the equaliser in the 44th minute before Agustín Canobbio completed the turnaround deep into first-half stoppage time to give Marcelo Bielsa’s side a 2-1 lead at the break.

Many expected the South Americans to control the second half, but Cape Verde had other ideas.

The Blue Sharks continued to attack with confidence and were rewarded in the 61st minute when substitute Hélio Varela capitalised on a costly defensive error involving Mathías Olivera and veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera before calmly rolling the ball into an empty net to level the match at 2-2.

Both teams created chances in a thrilling finale, but Cape Verde held firm to secure another historic result after their impressive goalless draw against Spain in their World Cup debut.

Uruguay remain one of football’s most decorated nations despite their recent struggles.

Known as ‘La Celeste’, they won the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930 on home soil before lifting their second world title in 1950 with the famous ‘Maracanazo’ victory over Brazil.

The South Americans have also won a record 15 Copa América titles and are one of the founding members of CONMEBOL, South America’s football confederation.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, are writing a new chapter in African football history.

The island nation, affiliated with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), qualified for their first-ever World Cup in 2026.

Although they have yet to win a major continental trophy, the Blue Sharks have become one of Africa’s fastest-rising football nations, regularly competing at the Africa Cup of Nations and earning respect through disciplined and fearless performances.

Uruguay are coached by renowned Argentine tactician Marcelo Bielsa, whose influential coaching career has included spells with Argentina, Chile, Leeds United, and several top clubs.

While Bielsa never won the World Cup as a coach, he guided Argentina to Olympic gold in 2004 and is widely regarded as one of football’s most innovative minds.

Cape Verde are led by Pedro ‘Bubista’ Brito, a former international midfielder who represented the country as a player before becoming head coach.

Under his leadership, the Blue Sharks have enjoyed the most successful period in their history, culminating in their historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and a series of unforgettable performances on football’s biggest stage.
