Ras Banamungu unveils groundbreaking rhythm-based healing model
Professor Idi (Ras) Banamungu, an internationally recognized researcher and Honorary Professor of Counselling Psychology, has developed a pioneering therapeutic approach known as Laughter Percussion, an innovative model that integrates drumming, laughter, and structured breathwork to enhance mental health and community wellbeing.
The approach, developed through the Laughter Percussion Academy in Western Australia, is designed to create a participatory and expressive form of therapy that moves beyond conventional clinical settings.
By combining rhythmic drumming with guided laughter exercises and controlled breathing techniques, the model aims to stimulate emotional release, improve psychological resilience, and strengthen social connection among participants.
Recent studies conducted in 2024 have shown promising results, with reported reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression ranging between 40% and 50%, particularly among trauma-affected individuals.
These findings highlight the potential of Laughter Percussion as a complementary intervention in mental health care, especially in communities experiencing emotional distress or social fragmentation.
The model has also demonstrated significant impact in educational environments.
At CAPS Kurrawang Primary School, a six-week pilot program integrating Laughter Percussion led to noticeable improvements in student engagement, emotional expression, and overall classroom participation.
Educators reported that students became more confident, expressive, and socially connected, suggesting the approach may offer valuable benefits in child development and learning contexts.
As a registered NDIS service provider, the Laughter Percussion Academy extends its programs across a wide range of sectors, including disability support services, aged care facilities, youth development programs, hospitals, and broader community organisations.
This wide application reflects the model’s flexibility and its potential to be adapted across diverse cultural and social settings.
Beyond his therapeutic work, Professor Banamungu’s academic contributions span human rights, migration law, and international business mobility.
His interdisciplinary research underscores a broader commitment to inclusion, wellbeing, and global social development, linking legal, psychological, and community-based perspectives.
Professor Banamungu holds a PhD in Human Rights and Migration Law, a Doctor of Business Administration, and serves as an Honorary Professor of Counselling Psychology.
He is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Laughter Percussion Academy, where he continues to advance research and practice in expressive and community-based therapeutic models.
Laughter Percussion is increasingly being recognized as a shift in therapeutic thinking—emphasizing collective healing, cultural adaptability, and embodied expression.
Rather than focusing solely on individual clinical treatment, the model encourages shared experiences that foster emotional release, resilience, and social cohesion.
