Sterling leaves Chelsea, Fernandes successor named, Paquetá returns to Flamengo and Saudi clubs target Dembélé

Raheem Sterling has officially departed Chelsea by mutual agreement after three-and-a-half seasons at Stamford Bridge.

The England international joined the Blues from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 for £50 million, signing a five-year contract during the club’s first transfer window under new American ownership led by Todd Boehly.

Despite high expectations, Sterling’s Chelsea career never fully took off.

Sterling made 81 appearances across all competitions, but his role diminished significantly over time.

He has not played for Chelsea since May 2024 and spent last season on loan at Arsenal.

Upon returning last summer, he trained away from the first team and was effectively frozen out.

With 18 months remaining on his contract and earning a reported £325,000 per week, Sterling was one of Chelsea’s highest-paid players despite his absence from matchday squads.

He was linked with moves to Fulham and Napoli but was unwilling to accept another loan, instead pushing for a permanent exit.

The contract termination allows him to join a new club on a free transfer, even after the transfer deadline.

Chelsea’s brief statement thanked him for his service and wished him well.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are enjoying a resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick, following statement victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.

With Champions League qualification now a realistic goal, Carrick has emerged as a genuine contender for the permanent managerial role.

While January transfer activity has been quiet, significant behind-the-scenes work is underway ahead of a summer rebuild.

Speculation has grown around the future of United captain Bruno Fernandes, with suggestions he may seek a new challenge after years of instability at Old Trafford.

Former midfielder Danny Murphy has named Chelsea’s Cole Palmer as a potential successor.

Palmer, reportedly unsettled at Chelsea, is said to be open to joining boyhood club Manchester United if circumstances align, though any deal would require a substantial transfer fee.

United are also monitoring AC Milan winger Rafael Leão, with the Serie A side open to selling the Portuguese star for around £70 million as part of their own squad overhaul.

Leão, 26, has been one of Milan’s standout performers, contributing 78 goals and 65 assists in 278 appearances.

His quality has earned praise from Zlatan Ibrahimović, who has labelled him “magic” and among the world’s best.

Elsewhere, West Ham United have been active in the market. On January 28, Lucas Paquetá completed a return to Flamengo in a record €42 million deal, signing a five-year contract after West Ham accepted the Brazilian club’s proposal.

On the same day, the Hammers confirmed the signing of Spanish winger Adama Traoré from Fulham.

The 30-year-old reunites with head coach Nuno Espírito Santo, under whom he enjoyed some of his best football at Wolves.

Traoré brings pace, power, and Premier League experience, having made 262 top-flight appearances.

Both player and manager expressed optimism about the partnership and West Ham’s ambitions for the remainder of the season.

Finally, Saudi Arabia is preparing for a major summer transfer push as part of its Vision 2030 strategy tied to World Cup ambitions.

The latest elite target is Paris Saint-Germain star and reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé.

At 28, Dembélé fits the Saudi profile perfectly, and stalled contract extension talks with PSG have been interpreted as an opportunity.

With PSG maintaining a strict salary cap, Saudi-backed clubs are exploring a potential nine-figure move, with Dembélé valued at around $110 million.

If completed, he would become the second Ballon d’Or winner to join the Saudi league in recent years, following Karim Benzema.

With increased private investment and ambitious ownership plans, Saudi football appears poised for another transformative summer.
