Guardiola warns Arsenal in Run-in as Haaland calls Anfield win significant
Manchester City are determined to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal as the title race enters a crucial phase, with 13 games remaining.
Pep Guardiola insists the race is far from over, warning that “many things can happen” during the run-in despite City trailing Arsenal by six points.
City boosted their hopes with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
After falling behind to a stunning Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick, City responded late through Bernardo Silva before Erling Haaland converted a stoppage-time penalty to secure only Guardiola’s second league win at Anfield.
The victory came in chaotic fashion, with Liverpool reduced to 10 men late on and a long-range Rayan Cherki goal controversially ruled out.
The win moved City closer to Arsenal, and the gap could shrink further if Guardiola’s side beat Fulham before Arsenal face Brentford.
While Opta’s supercomputer still gives Arsenal a commanding 90.1% chance of winning the title, City remain hopeful, with Guardiola stressing that a congested schedule, cup competitions, injuries and pressure games could all influence the outcome.
“Six points is a big gap, but 13 games is a lot,” Guardiola said.
“We have to be there, breathe down their necks and take advantage if they slip.”
He also highlighted City’s upcoming home clash against Arsenal as a must-win fixture.
Haaland described the Anfield victory as more than just three points, acknowledging it as a statement result.
City had arrived in poor form and without a league win at Anfield since the fan-free 2020-21 season, making the comeback even more significant.
Though the striker initially downplayed its importance, he later admitted the emotional impact on the fans and squad was undeniable.
The goal was Haaland’s first at Anfield and only his third in 13 appearances this year, following a prolific start to the season.
The Norwegian accepted criticism from Guardiola regarding his recent performances, admitting he needs to be sharper and more decisive.
However, he emphasized the importance of staying fit and continuing to contribute during a demanding schedule.
Liverpool, meanwhile, were left frustrated after conceding yet another late goal, a recurring issue this season.
Captain Virgil van Dijk admitted the team struggled to execute their game plan in the first half and acknowledged the need to improve defensively in crucial moments.
Liverpool have now conceded multiple decisive goals in stoppage time, damaging their title defence.
As the Premier League season enters its decisive stretch, City’s victory at Anfield may prove to be a turning point, reigniting belief that the title race is not over just yet.
