28 dead in Tanzania's fiery bus crash
At least 28 people have been killed and around 30 others injured after a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck carrying timber in eastern Tanzania, triggering a fire that destroyed the bus.
The accident occurred overnight on Thursday, October 8, into Friday, October 9, 2026, near Mkambarani in Morogoro Region, along the Morogoro–Dar es Salaam highway.
The bus was travelling from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya in southern Tanzania.
According to Tanzania’s The Citizen newspaper and the Associated Press (AP), 27 of the victims were bus passengers, while the other victim was travelling in the truck.
Joseph Mwasabeja, acting commander of the Morogoro Regional Fire and Rescue Force, said preliminary findings indicated that the truck driver was attempting to overtake other vehicles when the collision occurred.
The truck was travelling from Iringa towards Dar es Salaam when it collided with the oncoming bus.
The impact caused the bus to catch fire, leaving it completely burnt out and complicating rescue operations.
Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital received injured victims for treatment. Scholastica Ndunga, the hospital’s acting information officer, said the facility was working to establish the identities of the deceased.
In a report published on Friday, The Citizen said 17 of the 28 bodies had been identified by gender, comprising 10 men and seven women.
Severe burns had made identification difficult, prompting authorities to consider DNA testing to establish the victims’ identities.
Local media reports put the number of injured at around 30, although casualty figures were still being clarified as authorities continued their response.
The tragedy was accompanied by another fatal road accident in Morogoro Region on Thursday evening.
According to police, four people, including three police officers, died after a truck collided with a police vehicle in the Miti Bora area, between Dakawa and Dumila in Mvomero District. Seven other people were injured.
The officers were reportedly travelling to their workplace when the collision occurred.
The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
The two accidents have renewed attention on road safety in Tanzania, where collisions involving passenger buses and heavy commercial vehicles have repeatedly caused multiple fatalities.
In June 2025, a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a sugar-carrying lorry in Morogoro Region killed nine people and injured 44 others, according to The Citizen.
Authorities are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the latest crashes, while the identification of victims and treatment of survivors remain priorities.
The Mkambarani accident highlights the potentially devastating consequences of unsafe overtaking on busy highways, particularly where heavy trucks and passenger vehicles travel in opposite directions.
