Thomas Tuchel extends England stay until Euro 2028

The England national team confirmed that head coach Thomas Tuchel has signed a new contract to remain in charge of the senior men’s side through to UEFA EURO 2028, which will be held in the UK and Ireland.

Tuchel’s extension adds two more years to his tenure after a successful start that included leading the Three Lions to a record-breaking, unbeaten qualifying campaign for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

During qualification, England showcased dominant form, scoring 20 goals and not conceding a single one.

As a result, they have maintained a position inside the world’s top five rankings for the past seven-and-a-half years.

The new agreement also secures the futures of Tuchel’s core support staff — Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilário, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne — with all signing contracts that run until the summer of 2028.

The Football Association said the new deals provide clarity and focus for England’s preparations ahead of this year’s World Cup and for the UEFA Nations League fixtures that immediately follow, with the draw scheduled to take place on the same day in Brussels.

Looking further ahead, England will begin the task of qualifying for a unique European Championship on home soil in just over a year, culminating in a final at Wembley Stadium.

Tuchel expressed his delight at committing to the long-term project.

He said he has “loved every minute” of working with the players and coaching staff and is eager to lead the team in the World Cup, describing the opportunity as “incredible” and pledging to do his best to make the country proud.

He also spoke of the special nature of EURO 2028 and the desire to compete with the best teams on the biggest stage.

FA CEO Mark Bullingham welcomed Tuchel’s commitment, highlighting the coach’s impact since joining the national setup.

Bullingham described Tuchel as the right person for the job, noting the strength of the group’s unity and the backing of the players.

He emphasized that Tuchel’s experience, passion and knowledge give England the best possible chance of success, both at this summer’s World Cup and at EURO 2028.

Securing the coaching team early also removes the potential distraction of contract talks around the tournament.

Tuchel initially took charge as England head coach in January 2025 on an 18-month contract.

He arrived with a strong club pedigree, having won multiple major trophies with teams such as Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

His achievements include leading Chelsea to European and world club titles and earning UEFA and FIFA men’s coach of the year honors in 2021 for his contributions to English football.
