Rwandan boxers dominate third Kigali Universe Boxing Championship

Rwandan boxers delivered a dominant performance at the third Universe Boxing Championship in Kigali on May 28, 2026, defeating Ugandan opponents in both amateur and professional bouts in an impressive display.

Organized through a partnership between Sports Genix International (SGI) and Kigali Universe, this edition brought together some of the region’s rising boxing talents from Rwanda and Uganda.

The championship featured a series of amateur and professional contests that showcased the growing strength of boxing in East Africa.

The evening began with a series of amateur bouts contested over three rounds.

Fans were treated to exciting action as boxers displayed their technical skills, speed, and determination inside the ring.

One of the standout performers, Hagenimana Aman, secured victory over Iyanone Claude in the 51kg category

Buzuli Kennedy also impressed with a strong display against Nshimiyimana David in the 57kg division.

Mazimpaka Vedaste continued Rwanda’s strong showing by defeating Niyomurinzi Valens in the 60kg category, while Rubamba Iguru emerged victorious against Hirwa Fillia in another competitive 60kg contest.

Ndayishimiye Patrick completed the amateur program with a convincing win over Ainembabazi Pascal in the 75kg division.

Attention then shifted to the professional fights, where Rwandan boxers further demonstrated their superiority against visiting fighters from Uganda.

Mugisha Emmanuel opened the professional card with a confident victory over Mathias Marciano in the 66kg division.

Niyonayigize Isaac followed with an excellent performance to defeat Uganda’s Ssenyongo Hamza in the 57kg category.

The only setback for the host nation came when Nsabimana David suffered defeat against Uganda's Nasasira Moses in the 60kg division.

However, Rwanda quickly regained momentum as Hagenimana Aimable secured victory over Tumukunde Moses in the 59kg category.

In one of the night’s most entertaining contests, Nsengiyumva Vincent produced a dominant display to overcome Tumushime Christmas in the heavyweight 86kg division.

The victory further highlighted the depth of Rwanda’s boxing talent across multiple weight categories.

The women’s category also provided a memorable moment for the home crowd.

Nsengiyumva Angèle delivered a composed and technically impressive performance to defeat Uganda’s Najjemba Nadia in the 64kg category, earning one of the loudest ovations of the evening.

The championship featured fighters representing Amahoro Boxing Club, Inkuba Boxing Club, Kyengera Boxing Club Kampala, and Iyaga Boxing Club.

Launched in 2024, the Universe Boxing Championship has steadily grown into one of the region’s most important boxing platforms, providing opportunities for both amateur and professional athletes to gain valuable competitive experience.

Rwandan fighters dominated most bouts at the 2026 Universe Boxing Championship, showcasing Rwanda’s rapid boxing growth and strengthening its status as one of East Africa’s rising boxing powers.
